GreenBiz Webcast: What Will it Take for Brands to Fix Recycling?
(Thursday, February 25, 2020) Just about everyone knows we need to fix recycling, which has
plateaued or decreased at the same time that public concern over plastic and other waste has grown.
At the same time, there's growing momentum toward circular packaging and products. But who's job is
it to fix recycling? With governments largely on the sidelines, society is turning to the private sector to
reinvigorate or reinvent consumer recycling. So, what is the role of brands and what will it take to align
recycling rates with public concern over waste? In this conversation, we'll investigate what companies
are doing, what they can do and some of the lessons learned in partnering with retailers, governments
and consumers themselves. From 1:00-2:00 EST. More information and registration.

Why is Arizona trashing its recycling programs?
Arizona municipalities and cities across America are dropping popular recycling programs or scaling
them back drastically ever since China decided last year to limit reusable materials it would accept
from the United States. China has stated that their recycling facilities became overwhelmed and their
oceans were getting polluted. They also wanted to focus on their country’s own sustainable needs. The
move has forced several Arizona cities such as Mesa, Tucson, Surprise, Casa Grande, Sierra Vista
and Globe to reduce or eliminate their recycling programs. Read more.

Rules of life: From a pond to the beyond
The Cuatro Ciénegas Basin, in the Chihuahuan Desert in Mexico, was once a shallow sea that became
isolated from the Gulf of Mexico around 43 million years ago. This basin has an unusual characteristic
of being particularly nutrient-poor and harboring a “lost world” of many below-ground and above-ground
aquatic microbes of ancient marine ancestry. Because of these characteristics, it is an invaluable
place for researchers to study and understand how life may have existed on other planets in our solar
system. Read more.

ASU study finds microplastics create new homes for microbes in the Caribbean
With 5 trillion pieces of plastic in the oceans, the dynamics of marine environments are shifting in ways
that are yet to be discovered. Over time, discarded plastics such as sandwich bags and flip-flops have
degraded into small particles, called microplastics, which are less than 5 millimeters long. Kassandra
Dudek, doctoral student at Arizona State University's School of Life Sciences and former Smithsonian
Tropical Research Institute (STRI) fellow, looked at how marine microbial communities colonize
microplastics in Panama. Read more.

Psychology department, student services partner to advance sustainable behaviors
at ASU
Arizona State University is on track to eliminate all greenhouse gas emissions from building and
waste-related sources by 2025. This is just one way ASU is working to meet the university’s

No less than saving the world
One of the most audacious initiatives since the creation of the first university more than 1,000 years
ago began in the Yucatan jungle in 2004. Arizona State University President Michael M. Crow
convened a meeting in Temozón, Mexico, of a small but distinguished group of intellectual leaders who
were exploring a new idea: sustainability science. Could sustainability be a core value of a large public
research university? It would have to instruct and inspire new generations. It would have to solve
pressing real-world problems. And it would have to walk its talk. On the 15th anniversary of the Julie
Ann Wrigley Global Institute of Sustainability ASU has proven it can do all of that and more. Read

Locusts abroad are ravaging vegetation and crops in record numbers
First they devastated Somalia. Then Ethiopia. Now they’re ravaging most of East Africa, and there’s no
sign of them stopping anytime soon. Locusts of biblical proportions — estimated as high as 360 billion
— are destroying crops and farmlands throughout Africa in places where food insecurity is already
high, with the possibility of leaving millions starving. Last month the insects devoured their way through
Kenya from neighboring Somalia and Ethiopia. Africa hasn't seen an infestation like this since 1989. A
United Nations official said it also has the potential to be the most devastating plague in living memory
if something isn’t done soon. Read more.

The nature of cities is a lifelong fascination for new Regents Professor
When Nancy Grimm walked through the woods as a child, she wondered how it all fit together and
worked: the rain, the soil, the plants, the chemistry. She saw it was a system. But how? Now she
applies that thinking to urban ecology: How do cities and the natural world interact and affect each
other? A relatively new field that took off in the 1970s, urban ecology looks at the relation of living
organisms with each other and their surroundings in the context of an urban environment. Read more.

This company is turning food waste into a cleaning spray (from GreenBiz.com)
Water is the first ingredient listed on most household cleaners. It’s also the most dominant ingredient,
typically making up at least 90% of these products, according to the Ellen MacArthur Foundation.
Apparently, household cleaners and food waste have that quality in common. Food waste is comprised
of 75% water on average, according to Amanda Weeks, CEO and co-founder of Ambrosia, a food
waste solutions company previously known as Industrial/Organic. The fact that food waste contained
so much water made Ambrosia wonder: What are some water-based products that it could make from
the water — and acids and alcohol — it extracted from the food waste? Read more.

Spring 2020 Research Study Opportunity for Undergraduate Students
Take part in a paid focus group study (small discussion group) about how college students define and
understand dating relationships and hooking up being conducted by Dr. Lauren Reed, MSW, PhD,
School of Social Work. An hour and a half of your time will earn you a $25 Amazon gift card for your
participation! The discussion will be confidential, will focus on your ideas about college students as a
whole rather than your personal experiences, and no identifying information will be collected. You must
be 18 years old or older to participate, and you must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate student
at ASU. Focus groups will be led by one of your fellow ASU students and a member of our research
team (a graduate student or AmeriCorps staff member, no faculty!). You have the opportunity to sign
up for a focus group that most closely matches your gender identity and the groups you belong to on
campus. There are groups for International students, student athletes, LGTQ+ students, those in
Greek life, and open groups if you do not closely identify with any of the categories. Groups are being
held on multiple campuses. Your views will help us to better understand how college students define
and think about dating relationships to help inform services and programs for students on ASU
campuses. More information will be sent to those who sign up. Signing up is confidential through this
Google form link. Do not hesitate to email Lauren.A.Reed@asu.edu with any questions you may have.

Call for Applications: Five KLI Writing-up Fellowships in Interdisciplinary
Sustainability Science
The Konrad Lorenz Institute for Evolution and Cognition Research (KLI) Writing-Up Fellowship is an
individual fellowship awarded to excellent doctoral students in the final stage of their PhD to work
independently on research projects supervised by their advisor in their home institutes. We look
forward to receiving applications especially, but not exclusively, from the following research areas:
social-ecological research, innovation research, inter and transdisciplinary sustainability research,
transformation and transition research, environmental humanities, environmental history, and
environmental ethics, geography, environmental economics, political economy, history, philosophy, and
social studies of environmental and sustainability research. As "A Home to Theory that Matters," the
KLI privileges theoretical, conceptual, and formal as well as philosophical, historical, and reflexive work
in the life and sustainability sciences. Thus, the five fellowships are especially well-suited for two
categories of late-stage PhD students: Those who have completed empirical research and wish to use
the Writing-up Fellowship to elaborate on the (conceptual, epistemological, and methodological)
underpinnings and implications of their work; and those whose research deals with the historical,
philosophical, and conceptual foundations of sustainability research at the science/society interface.
The fellowship offers generous financial and career support to PhD students finalizing their thesis.
Fellows will enjoy the benefits of the KLI resident fellowship program and receive relocation allowance
and travel budgets for conferences. Deadlines: Full application: Feb. 29, 2020; and expected starting
date of the fellowship: Sep. 2020 (duration: 3-6 months). More information. If you have any questions,
please do not hesitate to contact KLI Scientific Director Guido Caniglia guido.caniglia@kli.ac.at.
