The relationship between religion, science and technology
The Pew Research Center has reported that more and more people identify themselves as “spiritual
but not religious.” How can this be explained in our highly technoscientific age? Since technoscience is
taken to be “secular,” how can we make sense of the relationship between our radical technoscientific
advances and our search for “spirituality”? A group of Arizona State University researchers will explore
these and other questions through a project titled “Beyond Secularization: A New Approach to Religion,
Science and Technology,” which has received a $1.7M grant from the Templeton Religion Trust. Read

Entrepreneurs prep for sustainable food businesses at ASU
What the food industry needs now is more players in a circular food economy — one that improves
rather than degrades the environment. ASU School of Sustainability Professor Arnim Wiek proclaimed
this to a rapt group of about 20 on a recent Wednesday night at the HEALab entrepreneurial space on
the Downtown Phoenix campus where they had gathered to participate in Prepped, a free, early-stage
food business accelerator program designed for ventures owned by women and underrepresented
minorities. Founded in 2016 as a collaborative effort between Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Edson
College of Nursing and Health Innovation and the College of Health Solutions, Prepped welcomed a
new partner into the mix this semester with the addition of the School of Sustainability. Read more.

'Hurricane Maria ... is still there'
Two years ago, Yiamar Rivera-Matos was at home with her family in Jayuya, a rural mountain town of
about 12,000 people in the center of Puerto Rico, when Hurricane Maria hit. The family lived without
power for three months, cooking with small gas tanks and eating canned food and root vegetables that
survived the tempest. Her mother had lived through Hurricane Georges in 1998 and knew what to
expect. She rationed all their supplies. Two years later, power has been restored to Puerto Rico, but
next-level reconstruction hasn’t happened. Now, Rivera-Matos is a PhD candidate at Arizona State
University, where she, her professor and other Puerto Rican students began work this summer to bring
renewable energy to the island. Read more.

Emerge 2020 needs you!
Emerge 2020 invites artists, scientists, innovators, activists, farmers, and cookers of all skills to join us
in producing interactive artworks, exhibits, and performances that playfully explores what it means to
Eat -- and not just anywhere, but rather at the Edge(s). We are curious: What does it mean to eat, as a
human or non-human, in a time of increasing environmental extremes? What alternative forms of food
production, distribution, and consumption could flourish at the edges of society, at the edge of what is
known, or at the border between possibility and fantasy? What new forms of eating are necessary to
create a more inclusive culinary world where deliciousness is accessible to everyone? We especially
encourage submissions that respond to the design aspirations of the New American University by
leveraging place, fusing intellectual disciplines, and/or being socially embedded. See all the details and
the deadline for proposal submissions is Monday, October 21, 2019.
