Campus Harvest of Seville Sour Oranges

2016 DOE Solid-State Lighting R&D Workshop
(Tuesday-Thursday, February 2-4, 2016) The 13th annual DOE Solid State Lighting (SSL) R&D Workshop is a not-to-be-missed event, where top experts and thought leaders from universities, labs, and companies large and small converge to share the latest on SSL advances, examine market forces that are shaping SSL technology, and explore how the technology is defining new market opportunities. (Thursday-Saturday, June 23-25, 2016) This 2nd Annual International Conference on Computational Social Science is an interdisciplinary event designed to engage a broad community of researchers - academics, industry experts, open data activists, government agency workers, and think tank analysts – dedicated to advancing social science knowledge through computational methods. This event affords the opportunity to meet and discuss works in which social systems and dynamics are investigated in a quantitative way through large datasets that are either mined from various sources (e.g. social media, communication systems) or created via controlled experiments or computational modeling. UGEC Viewpoints: The lucky country? Social space and community gardens in Australian cities (Alec Thornton)
In 1964, Donald Horne ironically described Australia as a ‘lucky country’, having exceptional opportunities for wealth creation, largely due to its natural resource-base and vast spaces for expansive development. He was being critical of what he perceived to be a ‘lack of innovation’, compared to other modern societies, and challenged decision-makers to be more ‘proactive’ and ‘clever’. Read more.

A revolutionary new tool developed at Arizona State University can help them apply analytics to how they use water, simultaneously helping water conservation, habitat restoration and their bottom line. Harvesting data: The impacts of increased urban farming
Arizona State University is taking the lead on a collaborative national project to answer questions like these. Researchers in the university are developing a physics-based model utilizing weather and farming data to predict environmental, economic and socio-economic impacts of increased urban agriculture. Report outlines new utility regulatory pathways
As more electricity providers enter the energy market, the way consumers obtain electricity is becoming more and more decentralized. Leaders of the Powering Tomorrow Initiative released their Phase Two report, which defines industry structures and regulatory packages that accommodate a growing number of market participants, while securing the vitality of existing utilities and a fair playing field for new market entrants. Sustainable Urban Water Transdisciplinary Research Program for Undergraduates
Summer 2016 will be the first year that the Urban Water Innovation Network offers an Undergraduate Research Program (URP). Ten students will be given the opportunity to perform cutting edge, transdisciplinary research of immediate relevance to people in urban areas. Where possible, pairs of students, one in the social sciences and one in the natural sciences / engineering will be placed with a team of mentors in each of the six study regions of the Network: Front Range of Colorado, Mid-Atlantic, Tucson-Phoenix Sun corridor, South Florida, California, Pacific Northwest Cascadia. Doris Duke Conservation Scholars Program, University of Washington
The Doris Duke Conservation Scholars Program at University of Washington is getting ready to recruit students for next summer. The goal of this two-year conservation immersion program is to broaden participation within conservation, and diversify what it means to be a "conservation professional." The program is looking for 20 freshmen and sophomores to join for an 8-week immersion course this summer. The program starts in Seattle and travels to various ExUrban (wildlands and rural) landscapes in Washington addressing urban conservation issues. Scholars don't have to be environmental science, or even science, majors, but should demonstrate a commitment to the environment and to diversity, and be curious, creative and enthusiastic - incipient change-makers. Because the program is geared for students early in their college careers, we are only able to take freshmen and sophomores.
