Spain/Morocco: Some Musings…

Spain/Morocco: Some Musings…

It is so hard to set a goal. I’ve thought about this many times, especially when struggling to reach one, but the hardest part is in defining what exactly the goal is.  I thought about this as I see the girls high school we visited today. These girls travel between 10-300km to go to a boarding school because there isn’t one in their village. They want to do well in school, they want to enjoy their friendships, they want to make their families happy. A colleague said she talked to the girls about what they can do with their life, and told them how if they did very well they can go to university. To the right person this can be a very powerful message, but it also needs support. It’s hard enough for me to set goals and I don’t live in a desert with a minimum of supplies, and I’ve been taught about the importance of setting goals. It gives me a lot of awe to realize how many people have taught themselves these behaviors.

Spain/Morocco: Energy in Morocco

Today we met with several people about the solar energy administration and after that I took off to meet with the culture collection in Mohammad V University. The woman I interviewed thought I was crazy because she had never been interviewed before, and definitely not interviewed on non-biological science material. The director of the center is exactly what a director should be, he has vision and has created the department from scratch.  He showed me the ideas and patents he is working on and issues they’ve had with western countries patenting indigenous microbes.

Spain/Morocco: Group Dynamics

Spain/Morocco: Group Dynamics

One important thing that I have learned about traveling in groups is that it is critical to find out how to take time for yourself. Each person has their own level of “gregariosity” and sometimes it can be hard on trips with other people to figure out how you can take time out for yourself.  Someone is always having a new idea what to do.  In our introduction meeting we talked about the difference in perceptions about personal space in different cultures and with different people in different cultures. This concept doesn’t only apply to physical space. Everyone needs a different amount of mental space. In past trips I have been the kind of person that wants to see everything and go all day.  If the group can be convinced to go somewhere then, I wanted to go, because I felt like otherwise I would be missing something. Now I realize though that taking time for yourself can make a trip go from average to extraordinary.

Spain/Morocco: Getting the Hang of Things

Spain/Morocco: Getting the Hang of Things

Today we had several very interesting meetings. The first was at the Peace Corps head quarters, then with a deputy minister in the ministry of innovation, technology and industry, and then we travelled to a conservation biologist who headed a large avian reserve. The straight of Gibraltar is a major pathway for birds to migrate through.  There wind energy is having the interesting impact of de-winging or decapitating many of them which is sad.

Spain/Morocco: Initial Observations

Spain/Morocco: Initial Observations

By Mady Tyson

It is hard to know what to make of the development trends we see. On the plane from Singapore now, I flew over Dubai and saw the famous development being built on new islands in the ocean. In Singapore there was the juxtaposition of Sentosa Island: a beautiful theme park island complete with universal studios expensive resorts water parks food, beaches and beautiful foliage, with the island of Palau Ubin, a similar Island except that it is undeveloped.
