Guatemala Reflections

Towards the end of our journey in Guatemala, our faculty director Scott Cloutier requested that we each reveal something that we learned about our study abroad group. Naturally, I was petrified. I have very acute social anxiety and—despite loving every single wonderful person on our bus that day—I wanted more than anything in the world to pull out my comfy Guatemalan blanket and hide. It was difficult for me to put everything we’d encountered together in just a few short phrases. It’s been so fun getting to know everyone and have thoughtful discussions about sustainability in developing countries. We’re a very cohesive and funny group! What I thought was especially interesting this week was the ways different parts of the community worked to address social issues.

The day for our departure to Guatemala is almost here! I’m excited and a tiny bit concerned–I was one of the few people who switched to the Sustainable Neighborhoods for Happiness™ study abroad group after the Nepal program, Transitioning Urban Livelihoods, was cancelled due to the recent devastating earthquakes. For months I’ve been mentally preparing myself for an Eastern culture-shock, but now I’m not sure what to expect.
