Higgins Professor of Environment and Society and Director of the Graduate School of Geography at Clark University (Ph.D., 1974, University of Wisconsin, Madison), is a student of human-environment relationships, ranging from ancient Mayan agriculture and environment in Mexico and Central America to contemporary global land-use change and sustainability science. He has conducted field research on these themes funded by the National Science Foundation, National Geographic Society, National Aeronautic and Space Administration, National Endowment for the Humanities, and the A.W.
