Biography

A primary focus of Dr. Batova's research is user experience: the ways real people in real life interact with technologies and how we can make these technologies more intuitive and more appealing by studying these interactions and their contexts of use.

The practices of sustainability can benefit immensely from thinking of its various factors in terms of user experience. For example, can we design garbage containers that promote recycling because they make recycling an intuitive and attractive activity? What information (and in which formats, media, and outputs) can we provide to residents of a city about a composting endeavor so that these residents feel more inclined to participate? These are some examples of questions I address in my research and teaching.
