Biography

Scott Collins' research focuses on the impact of natural disturbances and global environmental change on mesic and arid grassland ecosystems. He is particularly interested in the interactive effects of fire, grazing and drought in mesic grasslands in North America and South Africa, and how rainfall variability, temperature change, and shrub encroachment affect aridland ecosystems in the southwestern U.S. He is currently working on a) the effects of soil resource available on plant community diversity, b) the effects of increased rainfall variability on Chihuahuan Desert processes including plant community structure, net primary production and soil respiration, c) the effects of nighttime warming, winter rainfall and N deposition on species interactions in Chihuahuan Desert grassland, d) long-term vegetation dynamics in desert grassland, e) environmental genomics of fungi in desert grassland, and f) the interactive effects of fire and grazing on mesic grassland vegetation in Kansas and South Africa.
