Biography

Sabine Feisst holds a Ph.D. in Musicology from the Free University of Berlin. She served on the faculty at Bard College and the University of Notre Dame before joining Arizona State University in 2002. Her research interests focus on twentieth and twenty-first century music. In the last five years she has also explored ecomusicology, a nascent field of scholarly inquiry centering on interrelationships between music, culture and nature and on ecocriticism and sustainability. Having authored essays on ecologically conscious composers in Europe and the United States, she is currently working on a monograph on music and ecology, preparing the Oxford Handbook of Ecomusicology and, together with Denise Von Glahn, she is editing the book series “Music, Nature, Place” under contract with Indiana University Press. She teaches a graduate course on Music, Nature and Sustainability (MHL 691) in which students study environmental philosophies, acoustic ecology, animal studies, bioacoustics and questions of sustainability with regard to musical instrument building and performance.
