Biography

Milan Shrestha is a sustainability scientist with a background in environmental anthropology, international development and geospatial analysis. He is interested in studying the fundamental research question of how shared cultural knowledge and rules affect people’s perception and decision-making, particularly related to livelihood choices, disaster risks, agriculture-food systems, common pool resources and other sustainability challenges. He uses an interdisciplinary approach to combine social data with geospatial analysis and visualization techniques to reveal complex patterns of environmental change such as, land cover change, urban growth, landscape fragmentation, and glacial lake outburst flooding.

More recently, his research has focused on the agriculture-water-climate change nexus, particularly how people respond to climate change, glacial flood hazards and disaster risks, and how their sociocultural, economic and institutional factors might influence their social adaptation strategies. He has been collaborating with a group of geoscientists and water resources engineers in a multidisciplinary research, funded by the NSF and other agencies, focused on a science-driven and community-based approach to reducing glacial lake outburst flood risks in the Nepal Himalaya. His publications have appeared in, to name a few, Applied Geography, Natural Hazards, International Journal of Disaster Risks Reduction, Global Environmental Research, the Professional Geographer, Urban Ecosystem, and Sustainability – Open Access Journal.

Milan has served in the leadership positions of several professional organization since 2006. He is a recipient of the Christine Mirzayan Science Technology Fellowship of the National Academies and the Robert McNamara Fellowship of the World Bank. Milan has been a Sustaining Fellow of the Society for Applied Anthropology (SfAA) since 2013 and he recently rejoined the Executive Council of the Nepal and Himalayan Studies (ANHS).
