Biography

Hava Tirosh-Samuelson is Irving and Miriam Lowe Professor of Modern Judaism, the Director of Jewish Studies, and Professor of History at Arizona State University in Tempe. A Jewish intellectual historian by training, she has been deeply involved in the discourse on religion and ecology as the editor of Judaism and Ecology: Created World and Revealed World (2002) and the author of essays on Judaism and environmentalism in peer-reviewed journals, edited volumes, and reference books, including: Feminist Theology (2005); Encyclopedia of Religion, 2nd rev. edition (2005); the Encyclopedia of Religion and Nature (2005); Green Discipleship: Catholic Theological Ethics and the Environment (2011); Routledge Companion to Religion and Science (2012); Jewish Thought and Jewish Belief (2012) Blackwell Companion of Religion and Ecology (2015), Keywords in Environmental Studies (2015); and the Routledge Companion of Religion and Ecology (2016). In Spring 2016 she will offer a new course “Religion and Environment” that will be added to the Certificate in Environmental Humanities.

Professor Tirosh-Samuelson is the author of the award-winning Between Worlds: The Life and Work of Rabbi David ben Judah Messer Leon (1991) and of Happiness in Premodern Judaism: Virtue, Knowledge and Well-Being in Premodern Judaism (2003). She is also the editor of; Women and Gender in Jewish Philosophy (2004); Judaism and the Phenomenon of Life: The Legacy of Hans Jonas (2008); Building Better Humans? Refocusing the Debate on Transhumanism (2011), Hollywood’s Chosen People: The Jewish Experience in American Cinema (2012), and Jewish Philosophy for the Twenty-First Century: Personal Reflections (2014). Professor Tirosh-Samuelson is the Editor-in-Chief of the Library of Contemporary Jewish Philosophers (Brill, 2013-), a set of 20 volumes that features outstanding living Jewish thinkers. She is the recipient of several large grants to fund interdisciplinary research on religion, science and technology with a focus on transhumanism. She serves on the editorial board of Zygon: The Journal of Religion and Science and the advisory board of the book series “New Jewish Philosophy and Thought” for Indiana University Press. She referees manuscripts for academic journals, university presses, public and private foundations in the US and abroad.
