Biography

Diane Hope received her BSc (in Mining Geology) from London University, and subsequently worked as an exploration geologist for British Petroleum and as an assistant editor for the British-based 'Mining Magazine'. Hope subsequently retrained in the environmental sciences, gaining her MSc (in Ecology) and PhD (in Biogeochemistry) from the University of Aberdeen, Scotland, where she worked on a variety of research projects, including studying the effects of sheep grazing in the Scottish Highlands. Before moving to Arizona, Hope spent 5 years researching the relationship between carbon pools and fluxes in British soils and rivers, a project funded by the UK Department of the Environment. Following on from that project, the UK Natural Environment Research Council funded a project to quantify the role of gaseous carbon evasion in the carbon balance of northern temperate peatland systems, which Hope co-wrote and worked on as a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow. She has published in a wide range of journals including Environmental Pollution, Journal of Hydrology, Journal of Range Management, Biogeochemistry, Limnology & Oceanography, and Scottish Birds. Since fall 1997 Hope has worked as the Field Project Manager for CAP LTER, coordinating a wide range of field activities. She has also maintained research interests in biogeochemistry, focussing on the effects of urbanization on biogeochemical cycling. Specific research interests are the role that enhanced atmospheric deposition plays in the nitrogen cycle of arid urban systems and the effect of urbanization on surface water chemistry.
