Biography

In 1976, David Smith commenced as a research assistant at the Cavendish Laboratory in Cambridge (U.K.), and he was later Acting Director and then Director of the Cambridge University High Resolution Electron Microscopy Project. In 1984, he transferred to Arizona State University. and in 1991 he was appointed as Director of the Center for High Resolution Electron Microscopy and Principal Investigator for the NSF National User Facility for High Resolution Electron Microscopy. His long-term research interests have centered around atomic-resolution electron microscopy. More recently, he has focused on characterization of magnetic thin films and multilayers, as well as semiconductor heterostructures and nanostructures. He was President of the Microscopy Society of America in 2009, and he is currently Fellow of the Materials Research Society, Fellow of the American Physical Society and Fellow of the Institute of Physics (U.K.).
