Andreas Spanias is Professor in the School of Electrical, Computer, and Energy Engineering at Arizona State University (ASU). He is also the founder and director of the SenSIP Center and industry consortium (now NSF I/UCRC site). His research interests are in the areas of adaptive signal processing, speech processing, and audio sensing. He and his student team developed the computer simulation software Java-DSP (J-DSP - ISBN 0-9724984-0-0). He and his team won the 2012 Premier award for their iPhone/iPad education app. He is author of two text books:Audio Processing and Coding by Wiley and DSP: An Interactive Approach -2nd Edition. He served as Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing and as General Co-chair of IEEE ICASSP-99. He also served as the IEEE Signal Processing Vice-President for Conferences. Andreas Spanias is co-recipient of the 2002 IEEE Donald G. Fink paper prize award and was elected Fellow of the IEEE in 2003. He served as Distinguished lecturer for the IEEE Signal Processing Society in 2004. He is a series editor for Morgan & Claypool publishers.
Dr. Spanias and his collaborators have worked on sustainability projects that entails analyzing signals and data from sensor networks deployed in solar power applications. As a professor and center director, he initiated in 2009 several sponsored activities focused on solar panel monitoring using sensors that provide irradiance, temperature, voltage, and current data. Since 2010, he and Dr. Tepedelenlioglu obtained six grants (4 industry and 2 NSF) for utility scale solar energy fault detection, optimization and monitoring. Funded research addressed:
- Deploying sensors for individual solar panel monitoring;
- Parametric models for utility scale solar panel arrays ;
- Connection topologies for optimizing power solar panel arrays;
- Shading and soiling effects on solar panels;
- Faults and their effects on inverters and efficiency;
- Developing machine learning algorithms for fault detection;
- Experimental research in collaboration with the APS star facility to validate theoretical results.
