Summary

The Center for Biodiversity Outcomes is involved with a variety of activities and opportunities designed to advance the mutual biodiversity goals of the center and of the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Led by a subcommittee and key faculty affiliates, these activities and opportunities include:

IUCN Key Biodiversity Area standards

  • Collaborating with the IUCN on an analysis of transboundary Key Biodiversity Areas (areas with complex governance structures, such as an area spanning two countries).
  • Working with the IUCN Joint Species Survival Commission/World Commission on Protected Areas and the National Marine Fisheries Service to align the Important Marine Mammal Area initiative and support pilot Key Biodiversity Area identification for marine mammals.
  • Developing a project for Key Biodiversity Area identification in the Sonoran Desert and Gulf of California under the new IUCN Standard.

IUCN Red List Partnership

  • Partnering with 10 global conservation organizations on the IUCN Red List Committee to document the impacts of threats to the world’s biodiversity and provide governance to the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
  • Supporting a number of IUCN Species Specialist Groups to assess the status of the world’s corals, seagrasses and marine fishes.
  • Supporting the Desert Botanical Garden and the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy to assess and conserve regional flora and fauna under the newly formed IUCN SSC Sonoran Desert Plant Specialist Group.
  • Creation of the New World IUCN Red List Training Initiative to train scientists and students to conduct and implement Red List assessment methodology around the globe.

Potential opportunities

  • Contributing to IUCN’s Green List (an assessment of protected area success)
  • Collaborating on ways Key Biodiversity Areas can be used to measure biodiversity return on investment for corporate investors
