Biography

Sreetharan Kanthaswamy is an associate professor in the School of Mathematical and Natural Sciences at Arizona State University's West campus. He is also a research geneticist at the California National Primate Research Center, University of California, Davis. His research on primate genetics and genomics is centered on the investigation of anthropogenic and natural forces which shape and structure genetic variation of natural and captive animal populations.

His forensic science research is based on the analyses of traces of blood, saliva and hair collected at crime scenes or from civil cases for DNA-typing. To further forensic science and provide educational opportunities for students, his research aims to establish species-specific STRs, SNPs and mtDNA markers for accurate and precise genetic identification and to enhance population genetics databases for each species. Dr Kanthaswamy provides expert witness testimony on human and animal (veterinary) forensic DNA analysis and casework review.

Professor Kanthaswamy obtained his bachelor's degree (with honors) and master's degree in genetics at the University of Malaya, Malaysia. He then completed his doctorate at University of California-Davis, and did his postdoctoral research at the University of Iowa-Carver College of Medicine. Prior to joining ASU in 2015, he was a professor at the Environmental Toxicology Department, University of California-Davis and a visiting associate professor at the California State University, Sacramento Environmental Studies Department.
