Biography

Mohan is interested in the links between public policy, globalization processes, land use practices, and human development outcomes. His research draws on theories of social vulnerability, risk and hazards, and the effects of liberalized commodity and financial flows. Methodological interests include poverty and vulnerability mapping, as well as using spatial analytical tools for geographically targeted development.

Mohan's research has a geographical focus on rainfed farming areas of the semi-arid Deccan plateau, where resource degradation, indebtedness, unemployment, and malnutrition are at crisis levels. The increasing inter-regional inequality suggests that while some areas have benefited from economic liberalization, many others have not. He is interested in the social and environmental causes and consequences of such uneven development, and in effective public interventions to achieve poverty reduction.

Mohan is currently developing a spatial model, using a Geographical Information System and a range of biophysical and socio-economic data, to specify the location and extent of vulnerability to climate change, and to determine its correlates in Karnataka. Further research work will focus on smaller areas and use fine-scaled data. This work is expected to have a strong public policy engagement directed towards the sustainability of marginal areas.
