Joseph R. Herkert is Lincoln Associate Professor of Ethics and Technology at Arizona State University where he teaches ethics of engineering and technology and science, technology and society courses. Dr. Herkert works primarily in the field of engineering ethics, with particular focus on macroethical problems and issues. He is editor of Social, Ethical and Policy Implications of Engineering: Selected Readings (Wiley/IEEE Press, 2000) and has published numerous articles on engineering ethics and computing ethics in engineering, law, social science, and applied ethics journals. He is a frequent speaker on engineering ethics at academic conferences and professional meetings. Herkert is a past-president of the IEEE Society on Social Implications of Technology (SSIT) and the current editor of IEEE Technology and Society Magazine. In 2007 he was the inaugural recipient of the SSIT Distinguished Service Award. He is a member of the Executive Board of the National Institute for Engineering Ethics and for ten years served on the Advisory Board of the Online Center for Ethics in Engineering and Science. Herkert is the 2005 recipient of the Sterling Olmsted Award, the highest honor bestowed by the Liberal Education Division of the American Society for Engineering Education, for "the many contributions he has made as an educator and lecturer, as a contributor to the literature, and as a promoter of the ideals of liberal education in engineering education." He is also a registered Professional Engineer (Indiana) with more than five years experience in the power industry.
