Biography

Heidi Hogden’s drawings and installations look toward the natural world to understand the relationship between place and identity. The imagery for her autobiographical work is inspired by observational experience, photographic source material, and memory. Her work seeks to address environmental issues with goal of enhancing our sensitivity to the natural world. Since coming to the Herberger Institute of Art and Design at Arizona State University in 2017, Hogden has developed a creative practice that responds to issues in the Southwest landscape. Her primary research interests include landscape art; the merger of art practice with the history of animal sciences; creative projects that explore the relationships between memory and perception; and projects that examine the natural world through the language of drawing. Hogden received a Professional Development Grant from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, AR (2015) and a Faculty Professional Development Award from the School of Art at Arizona State University in Tempe, AZ (2018). She also received a artist’s grant to attend the Vermont Studio Center Artist Residency in Johnson, VT (2014 and 2018) and a fully funded Artist Residency from the Windgate College of Art and Design in Little Rock, AR (from 2015 to 2017). Hogden’s work has been published in the Boston Globe (2012), Manifest’s 10th International Drawing Annual (2016), and Studio Visit Magazine (2018). She has had the opportunity to show and present her work in ten solo exhibitions including the McGladrey Art Gallery at Bentley University in Waltham, MA (2013), and the Ann Maner and Alex Pappas Gallery at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, AR (2017). Her work has also been exhibited in numerous group exhibitions, including the Courtyard Gallery at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA (2012), the South Dakota Art Museum in Brookings, SD (2014), and the Arkansas Art Center in Little Rock, AR (2016), among others. Her exhibition record reflects both a dedication to drawing as a creative practice and an intellectual curiosity that connects the practice of drawing to larger fields of inquiry and engagement with community building projects.
