Dr. Wharton's research interests include a focus on local food systems and food security, specifically in relation to healthy food access via local food distribution and market outlets. He also studies lifestyle factors related to eating patterns and obesity, and consumer skepticism towards weight-loss information in the media. He teaches a course on computer applications in nutrition, has started a community-supported agriculture program on campus, and holds positions in the SCAN and HEN dietetic practice groups of American Dietetic Association.
