SRM Climate Geoengineering and Considerations of Intergenerational Equity

Due to the feckless response of the global community on climate policymaking, climate geoengineering has emerged as an increasingly viable option among commentators and some policymakers. One of the most widely discussed options is solar radiation management (SRM). While such techniques have the potential to serve as stopgap measures preceding effective mitigation responses, they also pose serious risks. This presentation focuses on the implications of the international legal principle of intergenerational equity in terms of potential deployment of SRM technologies. This talk is part of a larger series, “Energy and Society: Communities of Energy in Transition.”
Dr. Wil Burns is the Co-Director of the Forum for Climate Engineering Assessment. He previously served as the Director of the Energy Policy and Climate program at Johns Hopkins University.
