Urban Garden Talk: Integrating Aquaponics into the Phoenix Local Food System

Dr. George Brooks is a founder of the AgTech development firm NxT Horizon and regularly contributes to Aquaculture, the international magazine of seafood farming as well as Green Living AZ magazine. Currently, Dr. Brooks is the Vice President of the Arizona Green Chamber of Commerce and was recently re-elected as the chair of the South Mountain Village Planning Committee. In addition, he developed and currently teaches the course on Aquaponics at Mesa Community College.

In this talk, Dr. Brooks will discuss the implementation of aquaponics as a healthy system of food production that encourages consumers to grow their own food as well as aiding community gardens, urban farms, farmers markets, community supported agriculture and healthy food retailers. He will explore the question of the commercial viability of aquaponics in Phoenix, giving examples of how it is already being integrated into the Phoenix local, healthy food system.
