Debating the Anthropocene

J.R. McNeill is an environmental historian at Georgetown University and currently President-elect of the American Historical Association. He is also a member of the Anthropocene Working Group of the International Union of the Geological Sciences. His latest book, co-authored with Peter Engelke, is The Great Acceleration: An Environmental History of the Anthropocene since 1945 (Harvard University Press, 2016).

In this talk, McNeill will summarize and adjudicate some of the debates surrounding the term and concept of the Anthropocene, explain the role of the Anthropocene Working Group, and reflect upon the concept's significance for how we understand human impacts on the environment.
