In this talk, Dion will discuss how dominant ideologies and public institutions shape our understanding of history, knowledge, and the natural world. The job of the artist, he says, is to go against the grain of dominant culture and to challenge perception and convention. Dion has a longstanding interest in exploring how ideas about natural history are visualized and circulate in society.
Mark Dion has received numerous awards, including the Larry Aldrich Foundation Award (2001) and the Smithsonian American Art Museum's Lucida Art Award (2008). Over the past two decades, his work has been the subject of major exhibitions worldwide.
This event is presented in conjunction with the exhibition Trout Fishing in America and Other stories, on view at the ASU Art Museum through Jan. 17, 2015.
