Restoring degraded tropical forests generates big carbon gains

More than half of the world's aboveground carbon is stored in tropical forests, the degradation of which poses a direct threat to global climate regulation. Deforestation removes aboveground carbon in the form of trees, reducing the size of global carbon stocks in the process. Once forests are degraded, they are often perceived to have little ecological value, despite evidence of their ability to continue to provide important ecosystem services and to store significant amounts of carbon. Like marathon runners, locusts carbo-load before a long journey

It’s the night before the marathon. You’ve been training for months and now it’s go time. What’s for dinner? Huge bowl of pasta, probably. Or rice with veggies. Or a big baked potato (without the skin).

High-carbohydrate foods fill up your body’s fuel tanks with easily burnable energy, putting the best possible face on your performance. But however far you’re going to run, it’s probably nowhere near 350 kilometers, which is how far migrating locusts will fly in a single night. And before their epic journeys, locusts carbo-load too, according to a study published this month by an Arizona State University scientist. Read more.

Decision-makers should rely more on computer simulations during pandemic, ASU expert says

Computer simulations have been a critical part of the world’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, as millions of people closely follow projections about infection rates. Some computer models in mid-March predicted more than 2 million deaths if the U.S. didn’t act fast to contain the spread. But simulation models can do much more than project death rates. One international group of computer modelers has called on government decision-makers and their own academic community to be more proactive in using simulations for a pandemic. Read more.

Even bees argue over where to get dinner

It’s Friday night and you’re going out to dinner with your grandparents. You’re going to Sizzler, because they go there … every … single … Friday. It’s not a question. But on Saturday night, you head out with your friend who tries every new and funky place in town. Who knows what it’s going to be this weekend? There’s a learning behavior called latent inhibition. It screens out irrelevant stimuli, allowing the mind to focus on the most pressing and practical issues. If you’ve ignored emails to get a report in on deadline, you’re familiar with it. Bees with high latent inhibition forage at the same trusted spots, day in and day out. Low latent inhibition bees learn new and familiar food locations equally well. Read more.

The Future Substance of STEM Education Webinar/Workshop Call for Participants

We invite you to apply to be part of a virtual webinar-and-workshop-based project entitled "The Future Substance of STEM Education" sponsored by the National Science Foundation. The webinar dates will be September 15, 17, 23, and 24, 2020 (times TBD) and the Virtual Workshop (Design Studio Format): October 5-9, 2020 from 10:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. Pacific Time. This project will design novel STEM education programs that rethink the substantive content of STEM in higher education – the content that influences the breadth of participation in, and preparation for, tomorrow's careers and challenges. Specifically, that future STEM programs must dissolve the traditional silos between scientific knowledge, essential skills, and human values, nurturing what we are calling "humanistic knowledge" and "meta knowledge" alongside traditional "foundational knowledge". More about this framework can be found here. The workshop will follow a design studio format in which teams will produce curricular programs for the future. The webinars will feature discussions with noted leaders and thinkers in STEM and the role of STEM in society. We invite your application as an individual or part of a design team! Please apply here. Application deadline: August 12, 2020. More information can be found on the project website.
