The Future Substance of STEM Education Webinar/Workshop Call for Participants
We invite you to apply to be part of a virtual webinar-and-workshop-based project entitled "The Future
Substance of STEM Education" sponsored by the National Science Foundation. The webinar dates will
be September 15, 17, 23, and 24, 2020 (times TBD) and the Virtual Workshop (Design Studio Format):
October 5-9, 2020 from 10:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. Pacific Time. This project will design novel STEM
education programs that rethink the substantive content of STEM in higher education – the content that
influences the breadth of participation in, and preparation for, tomorrow's careers and challenges.
Specifically, that future STEM programs must dissolve the traditional silos between scientific
knowledge, essential skills, and human values, nurturing what we are calling "humanistic knowledge"
and "meta knowledge" alongside traditional "foundational knowledge". More about this framework can
be found here. The workshop will follow a design studio format in which teams will produce curricular
programs for the future. The webinars will feature discussions with noted leaders and thinkers in
STEM and the role of STEM in society. We invite your application as an individual or part of a design
team! Please apply here. Application deadline: August 12, 2020. More information can be found on the
project website.

Satellite survey shows California’s sinking coastal hot spots
A majority of the world's population lives on low-lying lands near the sea, some of which are predicted
to submerge by the end of the 21st century due to rising sea levels. Now, using precise measurements
from state-of-the-art satellite-based interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) that can detect the
land surface rise and fall with millimeter accuracy, an Arizona State University research team has, for
the first time, tracked the entire California coast’s vertical land motion. Read more.

ASU engineers offer insight on Tempe railway bridge collapse
The Union Pacific Salt River Bridge, a technological marvel at the time it was built in 1912, has
survived more than a century of floods and weather events on the Salt River, in an area now known as
Tempe Town Lake. That record ended with a train derailment and fire on Wednesday, July 29. Read

Researchers pinpoint how sorbent materials catch and release carbon
A key component of ambient direct air capture (DAC) systems that remove carbon dioxide from the air
is the sorbent material that is used to first capture the carbon and then to release it. Certain sorbent
materials can pull carbon dioxide from the air as it flows over the material. It then releases the carbon
when water is applied. As the material dries again, it absorbs carbon, and so on. This elegant function
of specific materials has been observed for several years by those working on DAC systems, like Klaus
Lackner, an Arizona State University professor in the School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built
Environment. Lackner has developed a system called “MechanicalTree” that uses sorbent materials to
remove carbon from air. Read more.

Are wetlands the answer to the 'invisible' wastewater crisis? (From GreenBiz.com)
Developing countries are failing to use nature-based solutions to solve wastewater crises, leaving
contaminated water to pollute environments, drinking water sources and urban areas. While
constructed wetlands have been used to treat wastewater across Europe and the United States since
the 1970s, their use remains limited in the global South. Read more.
