An optimist takes the helm at the National Science Foundation (from Science)
The new director of the National Science Foundation (NSF), Sethuraman “Panch” Panchanathan, is
familiar with the dark clouds over the agency. But those problems are no match for his relentless
optimism, expressed in his first public interview since taking office. Speaking remotely with Science, in
advance of his move to the Washington, D.C., area, the Indian-born computer scientist was
unabashedly upbeat about the future of U.S. academic research—where he has spent most of his
career—and about NSF’s role in supporting that community. Read more.

City of Phoenix Climate Action Plan
The City of Phoenix has completed our most recent greenhouse gas emissions inventories for city
operations and on a community-wide scale. We are using this updated data to help us develop a new,
focused Climate Action Plan (CAP) in line with the Paris Climate Accords. Our goal is to have a draft
CAP available for public comment in September with approval by the city council before the end of
2020. The CAP will not be a stagnant document. We will be continually working on expanding the CAP.
The City of Phoenix is already doing several things that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, like
increasing energy efficiency, capturing biogas emissions from wastewater, and composting. We know
we can do more. Right now, we are seeking the community's ideas and comments on potential actions
to improve air quality and reduce its carbon footprint through an online survey. We would like to hear
your thoughts on how to get there! You can learn more about the work City of Phoenix is doing and find
the survey at https://www.phoenix.gov/oep/climate. The survey is active through July 31, 2020.

Why hydration is so important when hiking in the heat of summer
You don’t have to be an experienced trailblazer to know that if you choose to hike in the heat, you
better be hydrated. Yet scientific literature on the subject reports that roughly 25% of heat-related
illness cases are a result of a fluid imbalance, rather than heat exposure alone. New Arizona State
University research seeks to understand exactly what is happening in the body as it responds to heat
stress. In particular, looking at hydration levels, core temperature and sweat loss, in the hopes of
developing interventions and best practices for those whose mountainous wanderlust just can’t be
quenched. Read more.
