Global Inequality and the Post-Growth Imperative: Rethinking Development
Economics in the Age of Climate Breakdown
(Tuesday, July 7, 2020) The income gap between the global North and South has increased
dramatically since the end of colonialism. Why is this happening? What is driving this divergence? And
how does global inequality play out in ecological terms? By identifying the structural determinants of
inequality, we can find effective ways to address it. But ultimately the solution requires that the
high-income nations of the global North abandon economic growth as a political objective and shift to
post-growth models, in order to actively scale down their use of resources and energy. This webinar
will be presented by Jason Hickel, University of London and is hosted by the Konrad Lorenz Institute,
Austria. From 5:00-6:30 p.m. Central European Time (8:00-9:30 a.m. in AZ). More information and

quality of life for their residents. In this collaborative workshop/ project management class, students will
work with the City of Peoria and ASU Project Cities on a real-life municipal sustainability challenge. The objective of this course is to engage students with stakeholders on an urban challenge through
robust deliberation of topic, review of literature, collection of data, documentation and analysis.
Students will utilize project management tools such as scope of work, SWOT analysis, and agenda
setting. Finally, the students will provide a professional final product(s) to the client. The course
benefits students by exposing them to a local city initiative and issue, allows them to interact with local
practitioners, provides them with an opportunity to research local issue that can directly influence local
policies, and helps students gain value added experience that can become a key highlight on their
resume. Questions? Contact Anne.Reichman@asu.edu or Nalini.Chhetri@asu.edu.
