School of Sustainability alumna provides tips on reducing food waste

As we try to tackle the wicked problem of climate change, one of the biggest and most important hurdles is the transformation of our food systems. While that may sound like a daunting task, the good news is there are little changes we can make each day to bring us closer to that transformation. One of these changes is reducing food waste, a concept that has found a passionate advocate in sustainable restauranteur Danielle Leoni. Read more.

Researchers develop new process to up solar cell performance

Experimental condensed matter physicists in the Department of Physics at the University of Oklahoma and an electrical engineering professor at Arizona State University have developed an approach to circumvent a major loss process that currently limits the efficiency of commercial solar cells. Solar cells convert the sun’s energy into electricity and are the main component of solar panels and many types of electrical devices as broad-ranging as satellites and calculators. Read more.

ASU SpringDanceFest moves from the stage to Zoom

Dance exists beyond the stage. Students, faculty and staff in Arizona State University's School of Film, Dance and Theatre have always explored how movement and dance performances can happen in nontraditional settings, from the steps leading to an art museum to the film screen. And now they are testing their creativity even more to find ways to inspire through movement and dance when they cannot dance together and cannot perform to an audience in those spaces with them. In an unwavering effort to continue to bring the arts to the community, a combination of students and faculty in the School of Film, Dance and Theatre will come together to present their first-ever virtual SpringDanceFest at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 25. ASU scientists lead study of galaxy's 'water worlds'

Astrophysical observations have shown that Neptune-like water-rich exoplanets are common in our galaxy. These “water worlds” are believed to be covered with a thick layer of water, hundreds to thousands of miles deep, above a rocky mantle. While water-rich exoplanets are common, their composition is very different from Earth, so there are many unknowns in terms of these planets’ structure, composition and geochemical cycles. Biodiversity, pandemics and the circle of life (GreenBiz.com)

This was supposed to be a big year for biodiversity — a "super year," as the United Nations proclaimed it as recently as February. A number of landmark global meetings were planned: a World Conservation Congress in France; a UN Ocean Conference in Portugal; and a Nature Summit in New York. These discussions were to culminate in October at a major global biodiversity conference in China, billed as the "Paris for biodiversity," a reference to COP21, where a landmark 2015 climate agreement was forged. Nature, it seems, had other plans. The coronavirus pandemic put pretty much all of that on the back burner. Addressing biodiversity, like so many other things, seems to have been shunted aside by the coronavirus outbreak. Read more.

New technique boosts versatility of 3D-printed metals

Advances in the capabilities of 3D printing technology have been achieved at a steady pace in recent years. But most of the progress has involved the printing of relatively pliable materials. Printing of less malleable things, particularly metal objects at the micrometer scale, has presented more of a challenge. Potential solutions for each of those problems may spring from results of recent research led by Chao Wang and Yu Yao, assistant professors of electrical, computer and energy engineering in the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University. Read more.

Tracking a silent killer

Ariane Middel is from a small village in western Germany where the weather is generally cold and rainy. When she moved to Phoenix in 2009 to do her postdoc at Arizona State University, her original focus was on water modeling research. Using LED lights, NeoLight aims to help tens of thousands of newborns every year

Each year, around 60% of newborns will come into the world with jaundice, a condition that manifests as a yellowing of the baby’s skin. Infant jaundice is easily treatable and is often treated with phototherapy, which involves exposing the newborn to blue light for a few days after birth. But in parts of the developing world that lack access to electricity or medical supplies, tens of thousands of infants die or develop brain damage each year from untreated jaundice. Read more.

Microsoft is building a ‘Planetary Computer’ to protect biodiversity (GreenBiz.com)

"The species of the world are connected with each other. I think that’s actually one of the lessons, the real reminders, if you will, of the year 2020, as we all live every day with the issues obviously created by COVID-19," observed Microsoft President Brad Smith, during a video launch for the company’s latest sustainability push — an ambitious initiative to support global biodiversity. Request for Proposals: Indicators for Integrating Land & Water Management in the Colorado Basin

The Babbitt Center for Land and Water Policy at the Lincoln Institute announces a request for proposals to develop a new set of indicators for assessing and tracking the integration of land and water resource policy and management in the Colorado River Basin. This will include quantification of the impact that management and policy practices have on local and regional sustainability. The development of a set of indicators linking integrated land and water management to water sustainability goals at geographic and administrative scales will be useful in addressing the challenges associated with planning for growth in an increasingly dry and hot climate in the Colorado River Basin. The chosen recipient will be awarded an agreement of up to $20,000 for the project. The deadline for proposals is May 15, 2020, by 6:00 p.m. (PDT). A pre-bid consultation is highly recommended; please contact Zach Sugg at zsugg@lincolninst.edu. Application guidelines.
