The pandemic is changing the dialogue about reusable packaging (GreenBiz.com)

There is no evidence that reusable bags, cups or containers contribute to the spread of the novel coronavirus any more or any less than their single-use counterparts. Whether intended for one, two or 200 uses, theoretically every vessel or satchel, under the right conditions, could carry or transmit something. Just like our clothes, countertops and keyboards, packaging is made from materials, and consumers must abide by sanitation best practices and health and safety guidelines. Yet, from the San Francisco Bay Area to New York, municipalities are temporarily repealing bans on single-use plastic bags and prohibiting reusables in grocery stores and food service settings to help reduce contamination and flatten the curve. What gives? Read more.

Why older adults really should drink to their health

Leonardo da Vinci called water “the driving force of all nature.” Indeed, it is common knowledge that it is an essential, life-sustaining element. But according to recent data collected by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, over 65% of adults ages 51 to 70 in the U.S. are not properly hydrated. Dyper and TerraCycle make composting diapers accessible (GreenBiz.com)

A baby will soil an average of 5,000 to 6,000 disposable diapers before they’re potty trained. And many of them will end up in a landfill. Made from multiple materials — plastic, wood pulp, superabsorbent synthetic polymers — diapers are difficult to break down. It’s estimated that the average diaper can take 500 years to biodegrade. Since the 1950s, when the disposable diaper came to be, it has grown to a $65 billion market worldwide. In the United States and Europe, plastic diapers are one of the largest categories of nonbiodegradable items in landfills; the problem is even worse in other parts of the world. Read more.

ASU researcher explores harmful species on a global scale

If you’ve spent time in national parks or state recreational areas, you’ve likely seen warnings about the spread of invasive species. From inspection checkpoints for cars and boats to restrictions on bringing firewood and fruit across state lines, officials are working to prevent outbreaks of pests, parasites and diseases, which can wreak havoc on entire ecosystems. Most examples are relatively small – impacting one localized region. But policymakers face difficult choices when vast numbers of invasive species and other kinds of harmful species affect multiple countries. Think of species like locusts and starlings or even diseases like smallpox and COVID-19. Should countries work together in multiple hot spots or divide the land between them for treatment? Read more.

Sun-powered nanotechnology could supply clean water and renewable energy

Hydrogen peroxide is commonly known as a household disinfectant for minor cuts and scrapes and a bleaching agent used in teeth-whitening products. But this weak acid is also a strong oxidizing agent — a chemical compound that extracts electrons from other substances. Because of that characteristic, hydrogen peroxide could be the key to a potentially more effective method for removing contaminants from water. Read more.

April is Water Awareness Month

Water Awareness Month is not only dedicated to promoting Arizona’s success in managing its water resources, it also is intended to encourage Arizonans to be conscious of every precious drop. After all, water is life to us all. Read more.
