(December 21, 2019) Produce On Wheels - With Out Waste (Produce Rescue) disperses fresh produce to communities at churches, schools and other entities throughout Southern Arizona and the Metropolitan Tucson and Phoenix service areas. 10 million lbs. of fresh nutritional rescued produce annually are delivered to agency sites for distribution to supporters. Anyone can contribute $12 to shop for up to 70 lbs of fresh produce, to share with neighbors, friends, family or someone who's in need. (Thursday-Friday, March 19-20, 2020) The Intermountain Sustainability Summit is an annual benchmark event where sustainability professionals from business, non-profits, government, and education come together, along with the next generation of leaders, to learn, share, network and build momentum as we work to improve our communities, environment and economy. There is a student poster contest and students whose posters are chosen to be displayed will receive free admission on the main Summit day, March 19, and be entered to win cash-card prizes. 18th Annual Climate Prediction Applications Science Workshop

(Tuesday-Thursday, April 14-16, 2020) The 18th Annual Climate Prediction Applications Science Workshop (CPASW) will bring together a diverse community to share developments in research and application of weather and climate information for societal decision-making. Participants will include researchers, service producers, resource managers, planners, practitioners, social scientists, and others making weather and climate-sensitive decisions. NOAA’s National Weather Service Climate Services Branch, Arizona State University, the Arizona State Climate Office, and many climate services partners are collaborating in the organization of the 2020 CPASW. The workshop will be held in Phoenix, AZ. Registration will open in February 2020. More information.


Phosphorus Forum 2020

(Thursday, April 30, 2020) Arizona State University's Sustainable Phosphorus Alliance will host its 4th annual Phosphorus Forum in Washington, DC. Professor Don Boesch of the University of Maryland's Center for Environmental Science will be providing the keynote at this day-long knowledge-sharing and networking event. Participants will include scientists, NGOs focused on water quality issues, nutrient recovery technology companies, fertilizer manufacturers, food producers, water utilities, farm consultants, government regulators, agricultural suppliers, phosphate mining companies, and others. Second Nature, a nonprofit organization focused on accelerating climate action in higher education, has recognized Arizona State University for its sustainability efforts including substantially reducing its carbon emissions. Second Nature also gave ASU “Marks of Distinction” in several other categories for its climate actions. Read more.

Bird’s-eye view of biodiversity, carbon cycling shows how tropical forests respond to climate change

Tropical forests are the most biologically diverse ecosystems on our planet, harboring an estimated 3 million to 50 million species. They’re also highly functionally diverse, meaning that each species has specific characteristics, or functional traits, allowing it to perform a unique and important role. For example, an important functional trait for trees is the amount of photosynthesis-performing chlorophyll contained in leaves. This trait quantifies how well the tree captures sunlight and is useful for predicting how well or how poorly the tree might survive in different environments. Read more.

Led by Nicole Darnall, associate dean and professor of public policy and management in Arizona State University’s School of Sustainability, students in SOS/PAF 545: Organizations, Sustainability and Public Policy have partnered with the City of Tempe to assist the city as it considers implementing a sustainable purchasing policy (SPP) to help it achieve its ambitious Climate Action Goals. The postage stamps that flew Amelia Earhart across the world (from Zocalo Public Square)

Americans looking to bankroll adventures in the early 20th century had to get creative. Expeditions were not cheap, and even wealthy individuals needed financial assistance to pay for equipment and crews. But two notable explorers got especially imaginative by relying on an early version of crowdfunding that piggybacked on a budding American craze: collecting stamps. Read more.

Feeling the vibrations of creation

Like every bass guitar player, Ed Garnero feels good vibrations. But his relationship with pulsing waves goes beyond wielding the biggest ax on the stage. Garnero is a seismologist at Arizona State University. He studies earthquakes and how waves move through Earth and other planets and he applies seismology to building guitars. He may be the only one of his kind in the world. Read more.

Popular Science picks ASU professor's 'MechanicalTree’ as a 2019 top technology

Popular Science magazine has given one of its top accolades to a device developed by Arizona State University researchers that can pull carbon gas from ambient air. The device, developed by ASU Professor Klaus Lackner and his colleagues and commercialized by Silicon Kingdom Holdings, Dublin, is called MechanicalTree. It is the world’s first passive direct air capture technology. Read more.
