The National Academy of Public Administration has inducted Nicole Darnall, associate dean and
professor in Arizona State University's School of Sustainability, into its 2019 class of fellows. Darnall is

Arizona State University professor Heather Throop penned a new research article that advances our
understanding of dryland litter cycles. Drylands are arid ecosystems characterized by a lack of water.

Sustainability Challenge - Fall 2019
The Sustainability Challenge is an opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students from
all four Arizona State University locations to make a difference on campus through an innovative
project, program, prototype, or intervention. Over the past decade, ASU has worked behind the scenes
to achieve #6 in the country and #7 in the world for sustainability in higher education. This has largely
been as a result of building practices, innovative partnerships, academics and policy changes. In order
to get to #1, ASU is seeking innovative strategies to a) shift on-campus behavior to be more
sustainable, and/or b) accelerate sustainability culture among the ASU community. The application
deadline is October 6, 2019 at 10 p.m. Applications are accepted in the Fall 2019 Semester and
projects are to be completed during Spring 2020. Students can apply individually or in a team of up to
five people. Applicants with projects that address issues in underrepresented populations are

Emerge 2020 needs you!
Emerge 2020 invites artists, scientists, innovators, activists, farmers, and cookers of all skills to join us
in producing interactive artworks, exhibits, and performances that playfully explores what it means to
Eat -- and not just anywhere, but rather at the Edge(s). We are curious: What does it mean to eat, as a
human or non-human, in a time of increasing environmental extremes? What alternative forms of food
production, distribution, and consumption could flourish at the edges of society, at the edge of what is
known, or at the border between possibility and fantasy? What new forms of eating are necessary to
create a more inclusive culinary world where deliciousness is accessible to everyone? We especially
encourage submissions that respond to the design aspirations of the New American University by
leveraging place, fusing intellectual disciplines, and/or being socially embedded. See all the details and

EPA Green Chemistry Challenge Awards
The Green Chemistry Challenge Awards promote the environmental and economic benefits of
developing and using novel green chemistry. These prestigious annual awards recognize chemical
technologies that incorporate the principles of green chemistry into chemical design, manufacture, and
use. EPA’s Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention sponsors the Green Chemistry
Challenge Awards in partnership with the American Chemical Society Green Chemistry Institute® and
other members of the chemical community including industry, trade associations, academic institutions,

Call for Applications for the School for the Future of Innovation in Society’s Winter
School
The annual Winter School on the Social Studies of Emerging Technologies, support by the NNCI, is a
learning retreat for graduate and postdoctoral students held during Arizona State University’s winter
break period when students and faculty can focus on their work in a distraction-free environment. The
program is designed to give participants an introduction to and practical experience with the methods
and theory employed by SFIS faculty and associates. Hands-on, collaborative instruction focuses on
innovative methods for investigating the societal aspects of emerging technologies. School is January

EPA’s 8th Annual Campus RainWorks Challenge
The Campus RainWorks Challenge is open to institutions of higher education across the United States
and its territories. With the support of a faculty advisor, teams that compete are asked to design an
innovative green infrastructure project for their campus that effectively manages stormwater pollution
and also provides additional benefits to the campus community and environment. To enter the 2019
Campus RainWorks Challenge, teams must complete and submit a registration form during the
registration period. Registration for the 2019 Campus Rainworks Challenge will be open from
September 1 through October 15, 2019. More information.
The Roy Award for Environmental Partnership
The Belfar Center for Science and International Affairs, Harvard Kennedy School is now accepting
nominations for the 2020 Roy Family Award for Environmental Partnership. The Roy Award is
presented every two years to an outstanding cross-sector partnership that enhances environmental
quality through novel and creative approaches. We are looking for partnerships that: (1) have
advanced a new idea, model, or paradigm that could be transferable to other issues or geographic
regions to improve the quality of the environment; and (2) have taken risks that result in significant
actions that contribute to solutions and create leverage for greater action; Self-nomination is
