Geography 2050: Powering Our Future Planet

Leverage Points 2019: International Conference on Sustainability Research and Transformation

13th International Congress of Orthopterology Society: Challenges in Front of Climatic and Environmental Changes

(March 24-28, 2019) This Congress will be organized for the first time in Africa. Monsoon rains found to be beneficial to underground aquifers

The summer monsoon in the deserts of the southwestern U.S. is known for bringing torrents of water, often filling dry stream beds and flooding urban streets. A common misconception when observing the fast moving water generated by monsoon storms is that most of the water is swept away into large rivers, with very little of it percolating into underground aquifers. New research dispels that myth. Read more.

ASU research demonstrates silicon-based tandem photovoltaic modules can compete in solar market

New solar energy research from Arizona State University demonstrates that silicon-based tandem photovoltaic modules, which convert sunlight to electricity with higher efficiency than present modules, will become increasingly attractive in the U.S. A paper that explores the costs vs. enhanced efficiency of this new solar technology appears in Nature Energy this week. The paper is authored by ASU Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering Assistant Research Professor Zhengshan J. Yu, graduate student Joe V. Carpenter and Assistant Professor Zachary Holman. Read more.

Marking 100 years of Grand Canyon National Park history

For the first time, thousands of high-quality archival materials chronicling the early history of Grand Canyon National Park have been made digitally available to the public through a partnership between ASU Library, Cline Library of Northern Arizona University, and Grand Canyon National Park. Coined "100 Years of Grand," the project commemorates the upcoming centennial of the legislative creation of the park in February 1919. Read more.

ASU professor wins prestigious award from American Geophysical Union

Every year the American Geophysical Union confers its Fred Whipple Award on a geoscientist who has made outstanding contributions to planetary science. Marriott plans to save 1 billion plastic straws a year (from GreenBiz.com)

Hotel giant Marriott has become the latest high profile brand to announce plans to ditch plastic straws and drinks stirrers worldwide. The hotelier, which has more than 6,500 properties around the world, confirmed late last week that it is set to remove plastic drinks items from its bars and restaurants by the end of July. Scholarship to WaterSmart Innovations Conference

The Arizona Municipal Water Users Association (AMWUA) is partnering with WaterSmart Innovations to offer a "first-timer" scholarship to the WaterSmart Innovations Conference & Exposition, October 3-5, 2018 in Las Vegas. The scholarship is open to Arizona water conservation or sustainability professionals who have not yet attended the conference and includes conference registration, admission to the VIP Reception and the EPA WaterSense/Alliance for Water Efficiency Awards Luncheon, a complimentary pre-conference workshop or post-conference tour, travel costs, and hotel. EPA Campus RainWorks Challenge

EPA is pleased to announce the 7th annual Campus RainWorks Challenge, a green infrastructure design competition open to colleges and universities across the country. The challenge seeks to engage with undergraduate and graduate students to foster a dialogue about stormwater management and showcase the environmental, economic, and social benefits of green infrastructure practices. Pollution associated with urban stormwater runoff is a problem that is growing in magnitude. The Campus RainWorks Challenge invites the current generation of scholars to lend their creativity and knowledge to the green infrastructure design process and become part of the solution to stormwater pollution. In the U.S., climate change has become a divisive issue because of the furor that drives our politics.
