Leverage Points 2019: International Conference on Sustainability Research and
Transformation
(Wednesday-Friday, February 6-8, 2019) Humanity sits at a crossroad between tragedy and

explore the deep leverage points that can lead to sustainability transformations, asking: how do we
transform ourselves, our science, our institutions, our interventions and our societies for a better
future? We hope that this conference will help us move from incremental to transformational change;
extend our thinking about complex sustainability challenges and deepen our collective and
transdisciplinary research practices. To be held at Leuphana University, Lüneburg, Germany. More

Making hot cities more livable
Challenges to our planet can overwhelmingly command the headlines: climate change, massive
population increases, dwindling resources. But with every crisis comes an opportunity for creativity —
innovative responses that have the potential to improve our lives and change how we interact with the
ecosystem and with one another. And in Phoenix and other “extreme” cities, there is growing urgency
to find those solutions. Arizona State University’s Thought Huddle podcast explores such ideas in its
latest episode, “Hot and Habitable: Creating Sustainable Cities.” Read more.

ASU project is designing the computational architecture of the future
Scotty, we need more power. Or, we need our tech to use less of it. To that end, an Arizona State
University research team has received a $17 million grant from the U.S. Department of Defense’s
Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to seek to create a new framework for
designing and building advanced computing platforms that will circumvent the power constraints that
exist in a growing range of technologies. Read more.

ASU scientists use satellites to measure vital underground water resources
The availability of water from underground aquifers is vital to the basic needs of more than 1.5 billion

Government policy, public perception and real-world economic consequence
In the U.S., climate change has become a divisive issue because of the furor that drives our politics.
But the Earth is experiencing a Great Transition as its peoples slowly shift from fossil fuels to wind,
plants, natural processes and our sun. What is not always thought about is the reality of getting from
Point A to Point B, which involves the governing and policy dimensions, as well as facing real-world
implications for economies and people's livelihoods. Read more.
