ASU Borderlands Food Bank/Produce On Wheels With - Out Waste
(Saturday, May 19, 2018) Produce On Wheels With - Out Waste (P.O.W.W.O.W.) disperses 10 million pounds of fresh, rescued produce annually to communities at various sites throughout southern Arizona and the metropolitan Tucson and Phoenix service areas. Contribute $10 to shop for up to 60 pounds of fresh produce for your family or to share with neighbors friends, or someone in need. P.O.W.W.O.W. is hosted by Changemaker Central @ ASU which exists to create a university-wide culture that empowers students to apply their passion, knowledge and expertise to create innovative solutions to local, national and global challenges. City of Scottsdale Green Buildings Lecture Series: Heating and Cooling with Ductless Mini-Splits
(Thursday, June 7, 2018) Used for decades in Europe and Asia, "ductless" mini-split heat pumps differ from traditional home heating and cooling systems. Instead of leaky and bulky ductwork, ductless mini-split heat pumps use an indoor unit connected to an outdoor unit via refrigerant lines. Up to 8 indoor units can be attached to one outdoor unit allowing for different temperature settings in various locations in the house. Find out how mini-splits can cut cooling costs by 30%. Three years later, that ongoing conversation — facilitated by the Sustainability Consortium and Forum for the Future, and representing 18 industry stakeholders — has produced an ambitious series of recommendations that guide principles of sustainability for this class of consumer goods and how these metrics should be disclosed. New Book: Sustainability and the American Naturalist Tradition
Sustainability and the American Naturalist Tradition: Revisiting Henry David Thoreau, Aldo Leopold, Rachel Carson, and Edward O. Wilson by Craig Thomas, explores the role of naturalists from the American environmental tradition in addressing "wicked," socio-ecological challenges in the 21st century. Craig is a recent alumni from the School of Sustainability (PhD 2015) and is currently a visiting lecturer as Salem State University. More information.
What will happen to solar panels after their useful lives are over? (From GreenBiz.com)
Solar power is having its hockey stick moment. Since the early 2000s, the amount of solar panels being installed worldwide has been growing exponentially, and it’s expected to continue to do so for decades. By the end of 2015, an estimated 222 gigawatts worth of solar energy had been installed worldwide. According to a recent report (PDF) from the International Renewable Energy Agency, that number could reach 4,500 GW by 2050. Read more.
Submissions to Special Issue on Urban Ecology and Sustainability, Remote Sensing Journal
Drs. Elizabeth Wentz and Qunshan Zhao (both, School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning, Arizona State University) are guest editing for a special issue of Remote Sensing. They are asking for submissions to the special issue on urban ecology and sustainability. The increase in the number of people living in urban areas, the proliferation of megacities, and the pervasive expansion of per-urban areas are some of the most challenging transformations of the 21st century. Urbanization has profoundly influenced urban ecosystem structures and functions, greatly changed the landscape within and around cities worldwide, and significantly influenced the living environment of urban residents. While great economic benefits are achieved by the urbanization process, negative ecological consequences such as urban heat island effects, biological invasion, air and water pollutions, and biodiversity loss and degradation are happening in the urban environment simultaneously. Thus, it is crucial to better understand how to create a sustainable urban environment, balance the conflicts between urbanization and human activities, and alleviate the negative impacts from urbanization process. They especially encourage submissions with a combination of different methodologies (remote sensing, spatial analysis, urban climatology, etc.) to understand the overarching topic. More information.
2018-2019 Research Seed Grants from the Program for Transborder Communities
The Program for Transborder Communities (PTC) invites application to its 2018-2019 Research Seed Grant cycle. PTC is an initiative of the Arizona State University, School of Transborder Studies. Seed Grants are awarded to ASU faculty to pursue research program focused on transborder communities and critical social, cultural, economic, political and environmental processes occurring at the intersection of borders and society. The main focus of the 2018 PTC Seed Grants is the Arizona-Sonora borderlands and its communities, yet applications focusing on other borders and transborder communities are also welcome. Seed grants are expected to result in a self-sustained research program able to leverage funding from external sources. This cycle is open to all ASU faculty who are eligible to submit grants to external funding agencies and doctoral students working with faculty in the social sciences and humanities at any of the ASU campuses. We encourage proposals involving at least one faculty of our partner institutions in the state of Sonora: Universidad de Sonora (UNISON), Colegio de Sonora (COLSON), and Centro de Investigación en Alimentación y Desarrollo (CIAD). Multi-State Salinity Coalition Student/Professor Scholarship to the 2019 MSSC Annual Salinity Summit
The MSSC will contribute $2,500 in value to the student/professor selected. Each applicant must be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student in water resources-related degree program.
