City of Scottsdale Green Buildings Lecture Series: Heating and Cooling with Ductless Mini-Splits
(Thursday, June 7, 2018) Used for decades in Europe and Asia, "ductless" mini-split heat pumps differ from traditional home heating and cooling systems. Instead of leaky and bulky ductwork, ductless mini-split heat pumps use an indoor unit connected to an outdoor unit via refrigerant lines. Up to 8 indoor units can be attached to one outdoor unit allowing for different temperature settings in various locations in the house. Find out how mini-splits can cut cooling costs by 30%. ASU Downtown Phoenix campus piloting healthy vending program
Arizona State University’s Downtown Phoenix campus is launching a pilot program designed to promote healthy living by adding new snack and beverage options to its vending machines. Vending machines at certain locations across the campus will add healthier snack and beverage choices to accompany traditional food and drinks found in the machines. Food and beverages will include nuts, granola bars and high-fiber chips as well as water, juice and tea. Read more.
Kansas City Chiefs debuts compostable peanut bags during football game (from GreenBiz.com)
It takes a village to make a compostable peanut bag. After all, it took the collaboration of four companies to make it happen: BASF; Hampton Farms; Aramark and the Kansas City Chiefs. It all started with the professional football team. As an initiative to implement additional sustainability efforts at Arrowhead Stadium, Brandon Hamilton, Kansas City Chiefs vice president of stadium operations, knew a compostable peanut package would get the stadium one step closer towards the Chiefs’ environmental initiative, "Extra Yard for the Environment." These startups are turning surplus food into new consumer products (from GreenBiz.com)
The idea began with a bin of discarded avocado pits. Where others would see waste, Drexel University Food Lab graduate students Sheetal Bahirat and Christa Kwaw-Yankson recognized an opportunity. After some experimenting, they made an avocado-pit tea by blanching, grating and dehydrating the pit. The tea has a mild, slightly fruity taste and a pleasing, natural pink color. Read more.
Global partnership propels ASU student's research on urban bicycling
Lindsey Conrow had hit an obstacle in her doctoral research at Arizona State University when the new PLuS Alliance initiative cleared the way for her to move forward. Conrow was able to complete her PhD in geography from the School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning thanks to ASU’s partnership with UNSW Sydney in Australia and King’s College London. San Diego approves recycled drinking water
The $3 billion “Pure Water San Diego” recycling program is officially underway. The goal of the Pure Water program is to recycle enough wastewater to produce one-third of San Diego’s water supply by 2035. Read more.
Multi-State Salinity Coalition Student/Professor Scholarship to the 2019 MSSC Annual Salinity Summit
The MSSC will contribute $2,500 in value to the student/professor selected. Each applicant must be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student in water resources-related degree program. Students must be enrolled in a program relating to water resources for the 2018-2019 academic year. Application deadline is June 29, 2018. More information.
