IHR Roundtable on Health and Human Well-being
(Thursday, April 5, 2018) The relationship between health and human well-being seems obvious. Health – often understood as the proper functioning of one’s body – is essential for well-being. Without health, one’s well-being necessarily suffers. Upon closer inspection, however, the extent and type of relation between health and well-being is less obvious. After all, there are no universally accepted theories of health or well-being. This interdisciplinary roundtable will explore current and alternative conceptions of health and its relation to human well-being. Invited speakers will come from a wide diversity of perspectives, including nutrition science, philosophy, and sustainability. DARPA Proposers Day Webinar
(Friday, March 23, 2018) DARPA is piloting a new program, the Polyplexus platform, to provide evidence analysis, synthesis tools, collaborative functionalities, new publication possibilities, and to connect researchers with interested sponsors. DARPA intends to award the first set of research contracts based upon ideas developed on Polyplexus in the fall of 2018 -- awards will go to people who participate in the pilot. Tropical forest countries are critical for reaching the climate goals under the Paris Agreement. Many of them have ambitious targets for protecting forests, provided they receive sufficient support from the international community. Among the most important forest countries is Brazil, home to the vast expanses of the Amazon rainforest. Brazil had considerable success in reducing its deforestation rate while increasing agriculture production in the decade from 2004. Read more.
ASU sustainability students work to keep the green in spring-training baseball
For most people, a spring-training baseball game means hot dogs and sunshine, but for a group of ASU students, the games mean thousands of empty bottles, slimy yogurt lids and handfuls of noodles. The monthlong season is an economic boon to Arizona as fans flock to the 10 stadiums around the Valley. But along with enjoying baseball, they generate tons of waste. A class from the School of Sustainability at Arizona State University is working to not only divert some of that garbage to be recycled, but also to engage with fans about sustainability in a way that’s positive and helpful. Certainly, "warming" is part of it, but the real danger is the increasing variance or the greater-than-normal fluctuations in all aspects of climate: temperature; humidity; winds; rain; snow; hurricanes; seasons; etc. It is like noting stock price averages but ignoring volatility; or measuring average blood sugar levels but ignoring wild fluctuations. ASU picked to advise Hong Kong on sustainability
When City University of Hong Kong asked Rob Melnick to present a keynote address at its annual S-Day for Hong Kong sustainability summit, he recognized it as an opportunity for Arizona State University to present the Special Administrative Region of Hong Kong with innovations and solutions to sustainability challenges. This wasn’t ASU’s first such invitation — ASU President Michael Crow spoke at the same event in 2014. Read more.
Climate and Health Champion Award recognition program
The Maricopa County Department of Public Health Office of Epidemiology is excited to announce that as a result from feedback from our Bridging Climate Change and Public Health meetings, we are launching a Climate and Health Champion Award recognition program. Winners will be announced in May 2018. The Climate and Health Champion Awards recognize local youth, individuals, businesses, and organizations that are taking steps toward implementing sustainable solutions, ecofriendly practices, or policies aimed at improving health and/or health equity (by eliminating economic or social barriers to health) that are at risk of climate-sensitive hazards. Recognition of these positive efforts is meant to spread information about successful interventions and to build community awareness and knowledge. Climate-sensitive hazards are exposures that we know put people's health at risk and are influenced by local- to global-scale climate change. We encourage consideration of risks that affect one group of people more than another. Examples of eligible projects might include water collection/distribution to address high summer temperatures, water conservation to address the potential for drought and water scarcity, school or community garden building, tree planting to increase shade or combat air pollution, community cleanup/beautification to encourage walking or biking, composting or recycling programs that reduce landfill trash, energy conservation, trip reduction programs, hybrid fleet programs, or assisting vulnerable populations (children and older adults, individuals with physical/cognitive impairment, individuals living in poverty, individuals experiencing homelessness, etc.) with adapting to climate change.
