NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

          NEW!

Getting to the source of poor water management

We often think of the impacts of extreme events, like the flooding in Houston or the damage from the earthquake this year in Mexico City, as resulting from some anomalous “Act of God” or natural hazard. Vulnerability researchers, however, know that the damage and loss experienced in any city is also the result of human decision-making and actions. Over years, decades and centuries, these decisions define the built environment, and the vulnerability of urban residents to hazards. Read more.

          NEW!

Research outlines interconnected benefits of urban agriculture

From a vacant plot in a blighted neighborhood spring neatly combed rows of plants put in by the neighbors. They meticulously care for this small piece of land, and among the drab-looking buildings sprouts a patch of green. Cultivating the land may have started as a way to unite a neighborhood, to give pride to place, or it might be the project of a local high school to teach land stewardship. Read more.

          NEW!

ASU developing biodegradable plastics made from bacteria

The world is awash in discarded plastics. A recent estimate of the amount of plastic in Earth's environment puts it at 6.3 billion metric tons, and some plastics can take up to 400 years to degrade. Assistant Professor Taylor Weiss says one way to solve this problem would be to make 100 percent biodegradable bioplastics that would dissolve in a matter of months. Read more.

          NEW!

          An ocean of possibility

Charlie Rolsky seems to be everywhere you look on campus. Tossing carne asada on a fire on a desert camping trip with biology students. Participating in an interpretive dance performance in the Biodesign Institute. Selling biology-inspired T-shirts for charity. With tattooed sleeves, the beard of a Sumerian general and a passion for the now, he tends to stand out. The impression comes across that he is savoring every moment and making the most of everything life offers. Read more.

The Inconvenient Youth: Pestering others on pro-social behavior (from GreenBiz.com)

Social influence is often instrumental for encouraging pro-social behavior in others. And who’s more influential than youth, with whom parents want to maintain mutual love and respect? This was the focus of a study (PDF) we published recently in Sustainability: The Journal of Record with regard to the Utah High School Clean Air Poster Contest. We piloted the annual outreach initiative a few years ago to engage teens learning to drive about the air pollution implications of their new driving privilege and to teach them driving strategies to preserve air quality.           Climate and Health Champion Award recognition program

The Maricopa County Department of Public Health Office of Epidemiology is excited to announce that as a result from feedback from our Bridging Climate Change and Public Health meetings, we are launching a Climate and Health Champion Award recognition program. Winners will be announced in May 2018. The Climate and Health Champion Awards recognize local youth, individuals, businesses, and organizations that are taking steps toward implementing sustainable solutions, ecofriendly practices, or policies aimed at improving health and/or health equity (by eliminating economic or social barriers to health) that are at risk of climate-sensitive hazards. Recognition of these positive efforts is meant to spread information about successful interventions and to build community awareness and knowledge. Climate-sensitive hazards are exposures that we know put people's health at risk and are influenced by local- to global-scale climate change. We encourage consideration of risks that affect one group of people more than another. Examples of eligible projects might include water collection/distribution to address high summer temperatures, water conservation to address the potential for drought and water scarcity, school or community garden building, tree planting to increase shade or combat air pollution, community cleanup/beautification to encourage walking or biking, composting or recycling programs that reduce landfill trash, energy conservation, trip reduction programs, hybrid fleet programs, or assisting vulnerable populations (children and older adults, individuals with physical/cognitive impairment, individuals living in poverty, individuals experiencing homelessness, etc.) with adapting to climate change. If you are a climate and health champion or know someone who is, please visit http://bit.ly/climatehealthchampion to nominate them for a Climate and Health Champion Award. Nominations will be open until March 31, 2018. If you have any further questions, please contact us at climateandhealth@mail.maricopa.gov.
