NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

          NEW!

This week, the "One Planet" summit meeting in Paris focused on meeting climate goals without the help of the U.S. government. ASU Now talked to Sir Crispin Tickell, a British diplomat, environmentalist and Distinguished Sustainability Fellow in Arizona State University's Julie Ann Wrigley Global Institute of Sustainability, about how climate-change thinking evolved in Europe and what could turn the tide in the U.S. Read more.

ASU, TCH Turning Old Advertising Banners Into Bags (from KJZZ.org)

You know those banners you see hanging from lampposts around the ASU campus? The ones advertising upcoming events, or promoting the Sun Devils? Well, the school and a nonprofit have found a new use for them once they’re taken down — and that new use is tote bags. Read more and listen to the story.

          NEW!

5 terrible, horrible, anti-sustainability Trump-era policy proposals (from GreenBiz.com)

The turbulent political environment in Washington is creating uncertainty for just about every aspect of American life. Among these are efforts by the Trump administration and Republicans in Congress to roll back progress on U.S. climate action. As companies of all types, from retailers to apparel makers to electric utilities, work to cut their emissions and move toward a clean-energy economy, efforts to derail U.S. policies that support cheaper, cleaner and better ways of doing things for businesses and consumers, threaten investments in new technologies by businesses and other institutions.           Why Chicago is pollinating bee populations (from GreenBiz.com)

The billowing stainless steel forms of Frank Gehry’s Pritzker bandshell seem to float up from behind the 3.5-acre Lurie Garden in Millennium Park, backed by Chicago’s celebrated skyline. Another landmark in a city long a laboratory for innovation in architecture and landscaping, the garden has been called a "model of responsible horticulture." Masses of flowering perennials and grasses are a striking counterpoint to the surrounding walls of concrete and glass. Perhaps most unexpected, at a place that sits atop a 4,000-vehicle underground parking garage and railroad depot in the inner city, are the bees that flit from flower to flower. Read more.

          NEW!

High school students celebrate the booming field of agriculture

Nearly 900 high school students from all over Arizona gathered at ASU's Polytechnic campus on December 8 for the 60th Arizona FFA Midwinter Conference to celebrate one of the state's most important industries - agriculture. The students competed in activities such as flower arranging, wildlife knowledge and food marketing; learned about careers in the field; and discussed how to debate topics such as genetically modified foods.           NEW!

Don't be silent about the EPA Clean Water rollback (from GreenBiz.com)

In the United States, we have developed public infrastructure capable of delivering clean, drinkable tap water almost everywhere. Unlike packaged water, tap water is economical and sustainable for daily hydration at home or on the go. But first, it must be clean. The most effective way to ensure safe drinking water at the tap is to protect drinking water sources from pollution. Implementing strong, clean water protections as written in the Clean Water Act and amended in the 2015 Clean Water Rule is essential to ensuring families have clean water to drink and use every day. It is even a meaningful step toward combating plastic pollution. Read more.
