NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

          NEW!

ASU establishes Swette Center for Sustainable Food Systems

ASU's new Kelly and Brian Swette Center for Sustainable Food Systems aims to tackle food systems from a holistic standpoint - taking into consideration water and energy use, carbon footprint and nutrition, all with an emphasis on efficiency across the global supply chain. The center will be housed within the School of Sustainability. Read more.

          NEW!

Renewable gas: the hot new fuel from animal waste? (From GreenBiz.com)

Renewable natural gas is an increasingly popular fuel for transportation companies, thanks to valuable renewable energy credits that can be sold separately, and gas prices that have stayed well below those of diesel. Read more.

          NEW!

Can McDonald's help solve climate change? (From GreenBiz.com)

For more than four years, McDonald’s has been traversing a long and arduous path to produce "sustainable beef" in its sprawling global supply chain. Now, it’s looking for solutions right under its feet. The fast-food giant is embarking on a small but potentially significant project to measure and analyze the ability of cattle farming to sequester carbon in soil, using a style of grazing called adaptive multi-paddock — AMP, for short. If it works, it could transform the way McDonald’s ranchers raise cattle and produce beef — while avoiding the release millions or even billions of tons of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Read more.

          NEW!

Solar fishing lights: One biologist’s bright idea, inspired by a lifetime love of the sea

When trawlers head out to sea, fishermen spend hours attaching glow sticks near hooks so fish can see the bait. They'll go through thousands of the sticks, tossing them overboard when the catch is hauled in - adding to the plastic trash in the world's oceans. Now imagine mini solar-powered lights that charge on the deck, save money and don't pollute. It's the bright idea of Jesse Senko, an ASU biologist and lifelong fisherman himself. Read more.

          NEW!

Code Talker 101: ASU professor, storyteller offers insight on history

The last living members of the Navajo Code Talkers are calling for the creation of a national museum to honor the memory of their elite band of brothers. It's a recognition many, including ASU Professor Laura Tohe, say is long overdue. With the recent honoring of a group of Code Talkers at a White House ceremony, Tohe shared more background on the history of this group. Read more.

          NEW!

Could perennial grains be the next climate-saving superstars? (From GreenBiz.com)

A new cereal grain more than 40 years in the making is finding its way into the marketplace in several forms, including a new product from food giant General Mills. Some believe it carries the promise of a whole new type of staple crop — one that requires minimal plowing, fertilizers or pesticides — that also could become a weapon in the battle against climate change.
