Carbon Offset Validation and Verification Workshops
(Thursday, November 16, 2017) ASU Sustainability Practices hosts Duke Carbon Offsets Initiative and Urban Offsets, Inc for carbon offset validation and verification trainings. Attendees will learn to assess the value of the carbon stored in urban trees by performing validation and verification assessments. Carbon offset generation and management is a burgeoning new industry in the field of sustainability operations; it is a service that is expected to be in high demand in the coming years from governments and other large institutions striving for climate neutrality. Innovations Talk: What is Political About Sustainability Research?
(Tuesday, November 14, 2017) Sandra van der Hel, Utrecht University will present What is Political About Sustainability Research? In this talk, these normative and political dimensions of sustainability research are explored based on a survey completed by 284 researchers participating in international research platform 'Future Earth: Research for Global Sustainability'. The talk will identify different attitudes of researchers towards these questions, as well as some deeply entrenched ideas about science and its role in society. Produce on Wheels Without Waste - Tempe
(Saturday, November 18, 2017) Produce on Wheels Without Waste (P.O.W.W.O.W.) disperses 10 million pounds of fresh, rescued produce annually to communities at various sites throughout southern Arizona and the metropolitan Tucson and Phoenix service areas. Contribute $10 to shop for up to 60 pounds of fresh produce for your family or to share with neighbors, friends or someone in need. Distribution of produce will take place from 8:00-11:00 a.m. at the Arizona State University, Tempe campus on Lot 58, which is located at directly east of Wells Fargo Arena. Watershed Management Group’s GreenLiving Workshop
(Sunday, November 12, 2017) Watershed Management Group's GreenLiving Co-op is all about learning how to conserve water and energy, grow food forests, and promote wildlife through creating beautiful landscapes. Come learn about passive water harvesting techniques and help improve someone's home. Join this educational work party and learn how to convert a grass yard to a pollinator rain garden that captures rainwater that flows from the rooftops and landscape. You will help shape the basins and berms, plant vegetation that will attract the pollinators, and spread a layer of rock mulch to retain the moisture. You'll also have the opportunity to learn how to install a basic drip irrigation system to water the plants until they are established. From 8:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. in Avondale. Desert Rivers Audubon Monthly Speaker: The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is Arizona's Refuge - for Birds and More
(Tuesday, November 14, 2017) The North American lands above the Arctic Circle are breeding grounds many iconic species of wildlife. Birds migrate from these remote yet precious breeding grounds to all six continents. Exploitation of fossil fuel resources below the tundra and the ocean's floor have disrupted and destroyed vast nesting sites and migration routes. Now these same industries and their political allies threaten what's left – the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. For the birds, wildlife, and indigenous peoples of the tundra, and for us – we should care and act. Bill Auberle is Professor Emeritus at Northern Arizona University. Create a Rain Garden in Glendale
(Saturday, November 18, 2017) Watershed Management Group has an upcoming workshop and we want YOU to join us! Come learn about passive water harvesting techniques and help improve the Glendale Community Center. A rain garden is a form of "green infrastructure" that uses rainwater to naturally irrigate native and desert-adapted plants. Rain gardens have the added benefit of creating wildlife habitat, providing shade cover, and preventing flooding and water pollution. While you create the rain garden, you'll learn how to shape berms and basins to passively harvest rainwater; use rip-rap for rock armoring to prevent erosion in downspout spillways; and properly plant trees and shrubs to create a shady and water-efficient desert landscape. Tenth International Conference on Climate Change: Impacts & Responses

There were more than 32 million bus rides taken in Phoenix last year, according to Valley Metro figures. Planting seeds of change
How does one eat part of a mesquite tree or a cactus? School of Art has a new course for students interested in sustainability and making art
We are offering a new course this spring Art 494 Sustainable Wood Art for non-majors. It is a three-credit course geared towards those who might have little to no experience working with wood and are interested in learning more about sustainable concepts connected to the medium. We will be creating functional objects such as carving spoons, cutting boards, and so forth through the sculptural lens. Are you passionate about sustainable materials? Soil matters more than you think (from GreenBiz.com)
As I walked through the verdant fields filled with a dazzling array of sorghum, hairy vetch, daikon radish, collards, cowpeas, clover, millet, kale, and other crops, I was struck by how different this field looked relative to so many other farms I've walked over the years. When we conducted a spade test, digging out a section of the soil with a simple tool, it revealed heavily clumped, rich brown matter with visible earthworms: soil life. Read more.

Grant funds are provided by the Water Resources Research Act, Section 104(b) program through the U.S. Geological Survey. The program provides support for research projects that explore new ideas to address water problems in Arizona and expand understanding of water and related phenomena. The entry of new research scientists, engineers and technicians in the water resources field and education of students through significant involvement in water research are primary program goals. EPA Announces 2017 Campus RainWorks Challenge
The Environmental Protection Agency is pleased to announce the rules for the 6th annual Campus RainWorks Challenge, a design competition open to U.S. colleges and universities. EPA seeks to engage undergraduate and graduate students in designing innovative green infrastructure for stormwater management to showcase the environmental, economic, and social benefits of green infrastructure practices. Stormwater pollution is a problem that is growing in scope and magnitude. Communities need planners, designers, engineers, and other professionals to create resilient and affordable infrastructure solutions for stormwater management. EPA's Campus RainWorks Challenge invites the current generation of scholars to lend their creativity, knowledge, and energy to become part of the solution.
