        Imagining a Different Future: Overcoming Barriers to Climate Justice

(Thursday-Friday, February 8-9, 2018) The conference will focus on a systematic analysis of barriers to action in the context of the process of change; global governance and law; economics and energy structures; the role of science and technology; and what we are learning about human psychology in relation to climate change. Tenth International Conference on Climate Change: Impacts & Responses

(Friday-Saturday, April 20-21, 2018) The conference will be held at the University of California at Berkeley in Berkeley, USA. Founded in 2009, the conference aims to create an interdisciplinary forum for the discussion of climate change, its causes, its eco-systemic impacts, and its human impacts.         Q&A: What lives in floodwater?

Hurricane Harvey, still stalled in the Gulf Coast region, has poured more than 20 inches of rain over the Houston area since Aug. 25. ASU Now spoke with Morteza Abbaszadegan, an Arizona State University professor of environmental microbiology and engineering, about the composition and safety of floodwaters and what to do after the floodwater recedes. He is the founding director of the National Science Foundation Water and Environmental Technology Center at ASU. His research expertise is in health-related water microbiology, pathogen removal, water quality in distribution systems, and techniques to detect viruses, bacteria and parasites in water environments.         ASU researchers enter race for early Alzheimer’s test

One of the greatest difficulties plaguing efforts to find effective treatments for Alzheimer’s is the enormous lag between the disease’s inception and the appearance of clinical symptoms, according to Paul Coleman, an Alzheimer’s researcher at the ASU-Banner Neurodegenerative Disease Research Center. In a new study, Coleman and his colleagues demonstrate the promise of an early blood test for Alzheimer’s disease. The results suggest that Alzheimer’s can be detected even before the onset of symptoms in persons at genetic risk for Alzheimer’s disease. Read more.

Gila River Indian Community residents haven’t chosen their housing since the 1800s. Their U.S. government-furnished homes are uninspired, inefficient and lacking reference to culture, experts say.         ASU, McCain team up to transform Phoenix riverbed

U.S. Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) and Arizona State University gave a preview on August 25th of a new effort to transform the entire Salt River bottom through metro Phoenix into an urban and environmental amenity, a project organizers hope would engage the creativity of the university community. The area being considered runs from Granite Reef Dam in the East Valley to the Tres Rios Wetlands in the West Valley. Read more.

        ASU scholar collaborates on solar research, benefits Arizona and Pakistan

It can be tricky balancing affordable electricity bills for customers and profits for utility companies, but the happy medium might lie in solar energy storage. Abdul Kashif Janjua, a fall 2016 exchange scholar from the U.S.-Pakistan Centers for Advanced Studies in Energy at Arizona State University, analyzed data and patterns to find an equilibrium for both sides of the equation.         ASU scientist scores major victory with FDA

Arizona State University scientist Rolf Halden jokes that his real job is to scare the public, but in the course of his work he has made the public healthier. Starting at the beginning of September, the Food and Drug Administration will prohibit the sale of personal-care products containing prominent antimicrobials, including triclosan and triclocarban — prized for their antimicrobial properties. The ban is a direct result of Halden’s research, which started in 2002. Read more.

        ASU team shines new light on photosynthesis

A team of scientists from ASU’s School of Molecular Sciences and Pennsylvania State University has taken us a step closer to unlocking the secrets of photosynthesis, and possibly to cleaner fuels. Their discovery was recently published online in Science and describes the structure of a reaction center (from a heliobacterium) which preserves the characteristics of the ancestral one, and so provides new insight into the evolution of photosynthesis. 6th Annual Winter School on Responsible Innovation and Social Studies of Emerging Technologies

The Winter School is an immersive experience for scholars who want to share their unique research and learn from peers and experts who use diverse approaches to investigate the human and social dimensions of emerging technologies. Winter School will enrich your network of peers, and mentors and all participants will present their research at the Research Symposium on January 9. Applicants should be advanced graduate students or recent PhDs (post-doc or untenured faculty within 3 years of PhD at time of application) with an expressed interest in studying emerging technologies, such as nanotechnology, synthetic biology, geoengineering, etc. Applicants may come from any discipline, but priority will be given to those whose research focuses on societal questions, and all applicants must be demonstrably proficient in English. The program will be held at Saguaro Lake Ranch in Mesa, AZ, with access to Sonoran Desert hiking, kayaking on Saguaro Lake, horseback riding, and relaxing by the Salt River. The program fees for accepted students will be covered by the NNCI including seven nights stay at the Saguaro Lake Ranch, all meals and local transportation from Tempe, Arizona. Participants will be responsible for securing their own travel to Phoenix, Arizona and should arrive in Tempe before 1:00 pm on January 3, 2018.         EPA Announces 2017 Campus RainWorks Challenge

The Environmental Protection Agency is pleased to announce the rules for the 6th annual Campus RainWorks Challenge, a design competition open to U.S. colleges and universities. EPA seeks to engage undergraduate and graduate students in designing innovative green infrastructure for stormwater management to showcase the environmental, economic, and social benefits of green infrastructure practices. Stormwater pollution is a problem that is growing in scope and magnitude. Communities need planners, designers, engineers, and other professionals to create resilient and affordable infrastructure solutions for stormwater management. EPA's Campus RainWorks Challenge invites the current generation of scholars to lend their creativity, knowledge, and energy to become part of the solution. Registration opens on September 1!!
