        Sustainability@ASU Free Film Screening: Felled

(Wednesday, August 23, 2017) Felled is a locally produced film about finding worth and beauty in something most consider to be trash. The film chronicles the journey of an urban pine tree saved from the landfill by two woodworkers who give the tree new meaning as a family dinner table. The film highlights the growing urban lumber movement and explores themes of waste, craftsmanship, and redemption. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.; showtime at 7:00 p.m. at Harkins Valley Art Theater, 509 S. We have nature’s storehouse of food around us every day in our environment. We simply have to recognize it as the Native Americans did and know how to use it. Master Gardener Kelly Athena will show you how to identify, when to harvest, and how to preserve natural foods such as barrel cactus, purslane, pigweed, London Rocket, desert lavender, brittlebrush, and creosote. (Thursday-Friday, 8-9 February 2018) The conference will focus on a systematic analysis of barriers to action in the context of the process of change; global governance and law; economics and energy structures; the role of science and technology; and what we are learning about human psychology in relation to climate change. Tenth International Conference on Climate Change: Impacts & Responses

(Friday-Saturday, April 20-21, 2018) The conference will be held at the University of California at Berkeley in Berkeley, USA. Founded in 2009, the conference aims to create an interdisciplinary forum for the discussion of climate change, its causes, its eco-systemic impacts, and its human impacts. The conference also explores technological, policy, strategic, and social responses to climate change. When scientists at Oregon Health and Science University announced Wednesday that they had successfully performed the first-ever gene editing of a human embryo to fix a mutation that causes a common heart disorder, it marked a significant scientific breakthrough. While it opens the door for the possibility of a future where humans can be protected from a variety of hereditary conditions, it also raises a host of ethical questions. Read more.

        Forum on Extreme Heat and Drought

How should communities build resilience for dealing with weather and climate-related hazards in the coming decades? Apply to participate in this day-long forum at Arizona Science Center on Saturday, September 16. The event is designed to gather the opinions of a diverse range of people from different backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives. You don't need to have knowledge about the topic to be selected. Applicants who are selected to participate will be notified in August. Those who are selected to participate will receive lunch during the event and a $50 stipend at the end of the day!         Hit Me with Your Sunshot

Are you into photography? If so, we have an exciting opportunity for you to win up to $2,500 in prizes! The SunShot Initiative launched the "Hit Me with Your SunShot" photo contest in an effort to collect the best photos that contain solar energy technologies. Winning entries will be featured on SunShot's webpage and in other collateral from the office. In addition to the $500 grand prize for the best overall photo, $250 prizes will be awarded to the best photos in eight categories, including solar installation, solar hardware and power electronics, and university research. Submissions will be judged by Simon Edelman, Chief Creative Officer for the Department of Energy, and Dennis Schroeder, a photographer at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Colorado. All professional and amateur photographers are encouraged to submit their photos. Photos submitted must be taken in the United States and be an original work of the person submitting.         Yes Virginia, there are rules for using gray water

Minimal rainfall in Arizona is a great reminder of why we need to use water as wisely as possible. This includes informing ourselves about the ever-increasing and innovative ways to recycle all types of water, such as the water from our washing machines, bathtubs, showers, and bathroom sinks. These are collectively referred to as “gray water”. In Arizona, gray water has been determined to be safe for irrigation of outdoor landscaping — even certain food-producing types of vegetation — as long as you follow some basic, common-sense practices.         EPA Announces 2017 Campus RainWorks Challenge

The Environmental Protection Agency is pleased to announce the rules for the 6th annual Campus RainWorks Challenge, a design competition open to U.S. colleges and universities. EPA seeks to engage undergraduate and graduate students in designing innovative green infrastructure for stormwater management to showcase the environmental, economic, and social benefits of green infrastructure practices. Stormwater pollution is a problem that is growing in scope and magnitude. Communities need planners, designers, engineers, and other professionals to create resilient and affordable infrastructure solutions for stormwater management. EPA's Campus RainWorks Challenge invites the current generation of scholars to lend their creativity, knowledge, and energy to become part of the solution. Registration opens on September 1!!
