(Wednesday, August 23, 2017) Felled is a locally produced film about finding worth and beauty in something most consider to be trash. The film chronicles the journey of an urban pine tree saved from the landfill by two woodworkers who give the tree new meaning as a family dinner table. The film highlights the growing urban lumber movement and explores themes of waste, craftsmanship, and redemption. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.; showtime at 7:00 p.m. at Harkins Valley Art Theater, 509 S. Energy Impacts 2017
(Wednesday-Thursday, July 26-27, 2017) Energy Impacts 2017 is the first North American conference focused on social science research related to the impacts of energy development - with a goal of synthesis, comparison and innovation among established and emerging energy impacts scholars from North America and abroad. The pace, scale and intensity of new energy development around the world demands credible and informed research about potential impacts to human communities that host energy developments. While a fast-growing body of research addresses social, economic, and behavioral impacts from large-scale energy development for host communities and landscapes, their discoveries are often isolated by disciplinary and geographic boundaries. We invite participation from sociologists, geographers, political scientists, public health specialists, economists, anthropologists, practitioners and other interested parties whose work addresses impacts of new energy development for host communities and landscapes. Twelfth International Conference on Interdisciplinary Social Sciences
(Wednesday-Friday, July 26-28, 2017) Announcing the Call for Papers for the Twelfth International Conference on Interdisciplinary Social Sciences, to be held at the International Conference Center in Hiroshima, Japan. Founded in 2006, the conference examines the nature of disciplinary practices in the study of society and the interdisciplinary practices that arise in the context of "real world" applications of social research and theory. The conference also investigates what constitutes "science" in a social context and the connections between the social and other sciences. The focus of papers ranges from the finely grained and empirical (research practices and results exemplifying one or more disciplines) to wide-ranging multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary perspectives on knowledge and method. We invite proposals for paper presentations, workshops/interactive sessions, posters/exhibits, colloquia, virtual posters, or virtual lightning talks. 7th Summer Institute on Sustainability and Energy
(Thursday-Wednesday, August 3-16, 2017) The Summer Institute on Sustainability and Energy (SISE) is a two-week "boot camp" for future decision makers eager to join the sustainability and energy revolution happening around the globe. Held annually on the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) since 2011, the program boasts 300 alumni. During weekdays, participants (SISE’ers) participate in high-level talks, visit energy and sustainability sites, and network with Chicago-area experts and program alumni. Forum on Extreme Heat and Drought
How should communities build resilience for dealing with weather and climate-related hazards in the coming decades? Apply to participate in this day-long forum at Arizona Science Center on Saturday, September 16. The event is designed to gather the opinions of a diverse range of people from different backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives. You don't need to have knowledge about the topic to be selected. Applicants who are selected to participate will be notified in August. Those who are selected to participate will receive lunch during the event and a $50 stipend at the end of the day! ASU students work with Himalayan farmers on irrigation solutions
In the Hindu Kush Himalaya region, an area that extends 3,500 kilometers across eight nations including Nepal and India, approximately 210 million smallholder farmers engage in a practice known as rain-fed agriculture. However, 80 percent of the annual rainfall in the area occurs during the annual four-month monsoon, so costly infrastructure is required to transport water from distant sources during the rest of the year. Are you into photography? If so, we have an exciting opportunity for you to win up to $2,500 in prizes! The SunShot Initiative launched the "Hit Me with Your SunShot" photo contest in an effort to collect the best photos that contain solar energy technologies. Winning entries will be featured on SunShot's webpage and in other collateral from the office. In addition to the $500 grand prize for the best overall photo, $250 prizes will be awarded to the best photos in eight categories, including solar installation, solar hardware and power electronics, and university research. Submissions will be judged by Simon Edelman, Chief Creative Officer for the Department of Energy, and Dennis Schroeder, a photographer at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Colorado. All professional and amateur photographers are encouraged to submit their photos. Photos submitted must be taken in the United States and be an original work of the person submitting. New Belgium, Yards, Sierra Nevada breweries leverage green tech (from GreenBiz.com)
The author recently took a trip to Asheville, North Carolina, with his wife and they toured the newly opened New Belgium Brewery. They learned that it was constructed on a plot of land that was less than desirable — an old auto junkyard and livestock auction house. With a focus on sustainability, New Belgium worked with scientists and environmentalists to clean up the land and water naturally by planting indigenous species that would remove some toxins and replenish the soil. EPA Announces 2017 Campus RainWorks Challenge
The Environmental Protection Agency is pleased to announce the rules for the 6th annual Campus RainWorks Challenge, a design competition open to U.S. colleges and universities. EPA seeks to engage undergraduate and graduate students in designing innovative green infrastructure for stormwater management to showcase the environmental, economic, and social benefits of green infrastructure practices. Stormwater pollution is a problem that is growing in scope and magnitude. Communities need planners, designers, engineers, and other professionals to create resilient and affordable infrastructure solutions for stormwater management.
