We invite participation from sociologists, geographers, political scientists, public health specialists, economists, anthropologists, practitioners and other interested parties whose work addresses impacts of new energy development for host communities and landscapes. Please visit http://www.energyimpacts.org to join a mailing list for future updates, and to add your profile to our growing data base of energy impacts researchers and professionals. The focus of papers ranges from the finely grained and empirical (research practices and results exemplifying one or more disciplines) to wide-ranging multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary perspectives on knowledge and method. We invite proposals for paper presentations, workshops/interactive sessions, posters/exhibits, colloquia, virtual posters, or virtual lightning talks. The conference features research addressing the annual themes and the 2017 Special Focus: "Cross-Cultural and Global Research as Interdisciplinary Practice." Proposal submittal deadline is December 26, 2016. More information.

Is this the year smart businesses tackle the SDGs? (From GreenBiz.com)

The Sustainable Development Goals read like the best-intentioned New Year’s resolutions: End poverty; promote peace and justice; cooperate and partner with others for the greater good; and so on. Makes you wonder if the resolutions will stick. Read more.

          NEW!

How U.S. farmers are saving apple pie (from GreenBiz.com)

Lovingly called "our national fruit" by Ralph Waldo Emerson, apples once proliferated in American backyards and orchards, a vital source of nutrition and a potent symbol of home. But now, most of the 15,000 named varieties grown here since 1804 are extinct. Only 15 kinds of apples (think Red Delicious and Gala) account for 90 percent of U.S. production. Read more.

          NEW!

10 amazing uses for biomimicry in business (from GreenBiz.com)

You’ve probably heard of biomimicry — the art and science of observing the living world, distilling strategies that stand the test of time and applying these deep principles to our human challenges. Bumps on the leading edge of the humpback whale’s flippers minimize turbulence — wind turbine blades that mimic them are 60 percent more efficient. Water beads up and rolls off the lotus leaf, cleaning dust from their surface. Lotus-San paint mimics this self-cleaning surface, saving maintenance costs, labor, energy, with no toxic cleansers. Nature’s 4-billion-year-old R&D lab offers a bottomless treasure-trove of energy efficient, low-toxic and time-tested Innovations. Read more.

          NEW!

Can new math help fight viral outbreaks?

The list of communicable global health threats seems ever growing, and frequently the limited resources available to fight these diseases must be picked up and redeployed — often haphazardly — as the next new threat emerges. But what if there were ways to wage a more effective war against all communicable diseases, using new combinations of proven complex sociological and statistical mathematic models to tell where an outbreak might occur, how it might spread and how best to fight it? Read more.

          NEW!

Giraffe numbers decline, but should we stick our necks out?

In 1826, the Ottoman Viceroy of Egypt gave Charles X a young female giraffe as a gift. The animal walked 560 miles from Marseilles to Paris, spending the night in specially built barns along the way. Crowds in the tens of thousands turned out. When it arrived in Paris, 100,000 people — an eighth of the city’s population — went to see a creature that hadn’t been viewed in Europe in 300 years.
