(Wednesday-Thursday, July 26-27, 2017) Energy Impacts 2017 is the first North American conference focused on social science research related to the impacts of energy development - with a goal of synthesis, comparison and innovation among established and emerging energy impacts scholars from North America and abroad. The pace, scale and intensity of new energy development around the world demands credible and informed research about potential impacts to human communities that host energy developments. While a fast-growing body of research addresses social, economic, and behavioral impacts from large-scale energy development for host communities and landscapes, their discoveries are often isolated by disciplinary and geographic boundaries. UGEC Viewpoints: Intermediary organizations and participatory river governance in Taiwan
In the past two decades, participatory approaches in river governance and/or in integrated watershed management have come to the fore in academia and public policy. In Taiwan, there has been high demand for knowledge on public participation in watershed management since 2006 when the government passed the eight year, NT$116 billion Flood-prone Area Management Plan. This study aims to identify and classify “intermediary organizations” and to understand their role and effect in facilitating and promoting participatory river governance in Taiwan. Read more.

'We should not be in the business of extinction'
A cheap and radical tool that enables geneticists and researchers to edit genomes easily by removing, adding or altering sections of the DNA sequence is causing a stir among scientists. The CRISPR-Cas9 uses gene-drive technology, which promotes the inheritance of a particular gene to increase its prevalence in a population, and it’s available on the internet for about $300. Arizona State University has been ranked in the top 10 in the nation for graduate employability, according to a new survey of employers. The Global University Employability Survey 2016 ranked ASU ninth in the country for preparing graduates for jobs, ahead of MIT, Columbia and UCLA. Read more.

Arizona Water Facts: Smart Stormwater Management
Like most communities across Arizona, the Cities of Mesa and Glendale historically considered stormwater to be a nuisance that needed to be quickly eliminated through an expensive pipe and channel system. Today is different. Mesa and Glendale are shifting the stormwater paradigm and recognizing stormwater as a resource that can be used to promote healthy urban communities. Read more.
Looking for life on Mars — in Chile
Two geoscientists at Arizona State University have made a discovery among hot springs in Chile that may spur scientists to revisit a location on Mars explored several years ago by NASA's Spirit rover. The discovery involves fingerlike structures that form in the hot spring deposits by processes that combine biological and non-biological activity. Read more.

The concept of urban resilience incorporates a very diverse set of adaptation and risk reduction practices under its umbrella. For example, dam construction, tree planting, slum regeneration, and smart city planning have all been labelled as a way of building more resilient cities.
