The pace, scale and intensity of new energy development around the world demands credible and informed research about potential impacts to human communities that host energy developments. While a fast-growing body of research addresses social, economic, and behavioral impacts from large-scale energy development for host communities and landscapes, their discoveries are often isolated by disciplinary and geographic boundaries. We invite participation from sociologists, geographers, political scientists, public health specialists, economists, anthropologists, practitioners and other interested parties whose work addresses impacts of new energy development for host communities and landscapes. Please visit http://www.energyimpacts.org to join a mailing list for future updates, and to add your profile to our growing data base of energy impacts researchers and professionals. The conference will be held at Ohio State University, Columbus.

NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Sparking new ideas on sustainable phosphorous

Nestled between silicon and sulfur on the periodic table of elements is a mineral that spontaneously combusts when it comes in contact with air and can be found on the tip of a match. Without it, we would die. “Phosphorus is essential to life,” said Matt Scholz, program manager for the Sustainable Phosphorus Alliance, an organization that promotes phosphorus recycling in the food system. “It’s in your bones and it’s in your DNA, and it’s the energy currency for the cell.” Read more.

UGEC Viewpoints: A role for novel ecosystems in the Anthropocene?

We have just had confirmation that we are living in a new geological era, the Anthropocene. However, it has long been widely recognised that all global ecosystems are under some level of anthropogenic influence, having suffered severe, irreversible damage both ecologically and socially. Many are highly unlikely to recover to their pre-influence status or, if they do recover, they will not be exactly as they were prior to human intervention. Read more.

          Lightning records jolt previous understanding

It turns out lightning isn’t always a flash, and an ASU researcher says a pair of newly classified records for distance and duration reshaping our views of the electric weather phenomena might be just the beginning. The World Meteorological Organization has recently confirmed that a bolt over Oklahoma in 2007 covered a horizontal distance of nearly 200 miles (321 km), and a streak over southern France in 2012 lasted for nearly 8 seconds. UGEC Viewpoints: A social-ecological systems approach to dengue-chikungunya-zika in urban coastal Ecuador

Latin America and the Caribbean are facing an unprecedented crisis of co-occurring epidemics of dengue fever, chikungunya and zika fever. These febrile viral diseases are transmitted by the urbanized and anthropophilic Aedes aegypti mosquito, which thrives in Latin America, where over 80% of the population live in urban areas. In the absence of effective therapeutics and vaccines, the public health sector is in urgent need of novel surveillance tools, vector control and management strategies to respond to this public health emergency.
