Innovations in Sustainable Food Systems: Improving Youth Engagement and Entrepreneurship on the Farm and Beyond
(Monday-Tuesday, May 4-5, 2015) The aging of farmers – in the US and globally – has been identified as one of the major structural and policy challenges facing the future of food security. As the older generation retires, are the Millennials willing and ready to take over the food security challenges? The imminent process of transition offers a window of opportunity to create a transformative vision of agriculture that is strategically geared towards the challenges we face in the future, including climate uncertainties, growing population and urbanization pressures, energy competition and resource scarcities. Introduction to Bicycle Mechanics
(Thursday, April 30, 2015) If you use a bike as a more sustainable transportation option, it is important to understand some basics of how bicycles work. The class will cover the parts of a bicycle, basic bicycle tools, and how to fix a flat tire. It will also go over simple tasks you can do yourself to take care of your bike. (Friday, May 8, 2015) The inaugural keynote address will be given by Professor Daniel Etsy, Director of the Yale Center for Environmental Law and Policy at Yale Law School. This extraordinary conference will feature panels and presentations from more than 60 law professors from throughout the United States and Canada, describing their latest research in a wide variety of sustainability-related fields. World Wide Views on Climate and Energy
(Saturday, June 6, 2015) World Wide Views on Climate and Energy is a global citizen consultation, providing unique information about how far citizens around the world are willing to go, in order to deal with climate change and to bring forward an energy transition. Arizona State University (ASU) will be the location for one of four citizen forums being conducted in the United States. About 100 citizens, selected to reflect the demographic diversity in their countries or regions will attend daylong meetings, starting at dawn in the Pacific, and continuing until dusk in the Americas. Citizens will express their views on an identical set of questions, designed to reflect policy controversies at the global negotiations and political discussions about climate and energy in general. The results will be made available online and presented locally and globally to inform policymakers and negotiations leading up to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Conference of the Parties (COP 21) taking place in Paris in December of 2015. Project partners for Arizona are the ASU Consortium for Science, Policy and Outcomes and the ASU Walton Sustainability Solutions Initiative. More information and how to participate.
Democracy Conference 2015: By the People
(Thursday-Saturday, December 3-5, 2015) Arizona State University will be hosting a conference on participatory democracy, civic engagement and citizenship education. The event will be designed to share research findings, engage in provocative and meaningful discussions, learn from accomplishments and failures, and be inspired by innovative approaches, strategies, policies, tools and practices. The conference will bring together academics, students, practitioners, researchers, appointed and elected public officials, teachers, administrators, members of community organizations, and all those interested in participatory democracy, public engagement and citizenship education. The conference will combine academic presentations with practical workshops, We are interested in attracting theoretical and empirical contributions that are related to the three conference themes. Rebecca spent two weeks along with seven other team members from five different countries on a simulated mission at the Mars Desert Research Station, Utah. The Mars Desert Research Station is operated by the Mars Society to further the Society's ultimate goal to explore and settle the Red Planet. Advanced Smartscape Irrigation Course
(Thursdays, May 7, 14, and 21, 2015) The Advanced Smartscape Irrigation course builds upon the basic Smartscape course by offering in-depth technical training for landscape professionals on the design, installation, maintenance, and management of drip and sprinkler irrigation systems in the Sonoran Desert. The course stresses irrigation efficiency and wise water use in turf and other landscapes. It is encouraged that registrants have a basic working knowledge of drip and/or sprinkler irrigation systems prior to taking this class. More information on the course. 8th Annual Conference of the Academy of Innovation and Entrepreneurship
