          2nd Singapore Sustainability Symposium: Sustainable City Design

(Wednesday-Thursday, April 15-17, 2015) With the continued commitment of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University (NTU) to sustainability and urban solutions that are transdisciplinary, transboundary, and fully integrated, NTU's Sustainable Earth Office (SEO) and Institute for Advanced Studies (IAS), in collaboration with a number of Singapore’s Agencies, are organizing the second S3 in Singapore. The symposium will have a Singaporean flavor, with a special interest in the challenges faced by cities and urbanization. The title of this year's symposium is Sustainable City Design, and S3 will again serve as early input to the World Cities Summit (held next summer 2015 in New York). This year's symposium will begin with a public lecture and discussion panel including the presentation by a Minister of key objectives from Singapore's new sustainability plan. More information.

WRRC Annual Conference 2015: Indigenous Perspectives on Sustainable Water Practices

(Tuesday-Wednesday, June 9-10, 2015) Please join us for the WRRC 2015 Annual Conference, "Indigenous Perspectives on Sustainable Water Practices" to be held at the Wild Horse Pass Hotel & Casino in Chandler, Arizona.           Conference on Complex Systems 2015

(Monday-Friday, September 28-October, 2015) The annual European Conferences on Complex Systems (ECCS) have become a major venue for the Complex Systems Community since they were started in 2003. For the first time, this year, the conference will be held in North America to foster and multiply contacts between the European, North American and Asian communities working in this domain.           Scientist encourages inclusion in technologies development

In anticipation of a Future Tense event on technology and the future taking place in Washington, DC, Senior Sustainability Scientist Sethuraman Panchanathan explores the subject in Slate magazine. His article, titled “The best adaptive technologies are designed by, not for, people with disabilities,” illustrates this point using ASU graduate David Hayden as an example. Hayden, who is visually impaired, used his disability to develop an assistive tablet called the Note-Taker – a technology that his sighted peers were also eager to use. Read more.

This round-the-world flight of a solar-powered airplane is set to begin as early as Saturday (depending on weather), and one of its four US stopovers will be in Phoenix. On a test flight stopover in 2013, the pilots attended ASU's engineering convocation.

          New study brings medicine closer to non-addictive painkillers

Powerful opiate drugs are a mainstay in modern medicine, alleviating pain in both acute and chronic forms. These charms however, bear a curse. Users quickly develop tolerance to their effects, requiring ever-increasing doses of the drug. Further, such opioid compounds lead to drug dependence, owing to their notoriously addictive qualities.           Balance-Unbalance 2015: ASU Student Volunteers Needed!

Attend an amazing upcoming interdisciplinary conference: Balance-Unbalance 2015 which explores water, climate, and place and get free access to all events by volunteering. Balance-Unbalance 2015 will take place from 25-29 March on ASU's Tempe campus and brings international, local, and indigenous artists, musicians, scientists, scholars, and aid agencies together to discuss water, climate and place issues with the goal of developing solutions through cross-disciplinary thinking. The conference includes public events, such as the building and launch of a large hot air balloon made from 11,000 used shopping bags that would otherwise be trash and a performance with 100 musicians in boats on Tempe Town Lake.
