Three transects were established at each study reach. Transects ran perpendicular to the stream, and spanned one or two sides of the riparian zone depending on access. The length of each transect varied depending on the width of the riparian zone. Two survey methods were employed for these surveys: (1) recorded birds along each whole transect in March and April 2012, and (2) recorded birds via point counts for all subsequent surveys. To keep sampling effort consistent between transects, we established one to three stations per transect (total of six stations per reach) to sample bird communities via point counts. Observers recorded all birds seen and heard along the length of the transects in March and April 2012. A trained observer recorded all birds seen and heard using 50-m fixed radius point count in June 2012 and throughout 2013. Point counts in June of 2012 were performed for 10 minutes whereas subsequent point counts were performed for 15 minutes (with observations delineated in 5-minute intervals as noted in the recording_window field). In addition, birds species observed while on-site but not within the survey window were recorded. These observations are noted as “Site” in the data_type field whereas bird observations during the prescribed survey window are noted as “Survey” in the data_type field. Surveys were conducted under similar environmental conditions (i.e., no heavy rain, wind less than 20 mph) and were completed within four hours of sunrise.
